The new drugs are synthetic versions of resveratrol which is found in red wine and is believed to have an anti-ageing effect as it boosts activity of a protein called SIRT1.
Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has been testing the medications on patients suffering with medical conditions including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The work proves that a single anti-ageing enzyme in the body can be targeted, with the potential to prevent age-related diseases and extend lifespans.
The most common naturally-occurring activator is resveratrol, which is found in small quantities in red wine, but synthetic activators with much stronger activity are already being developed.
Despite this, there have already been promising results in some trials with implications for cancer, cardiovascular disease and cardiac failure, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, fatty liver disease, cataracts, osteoporosis, muscle wasting, sleep disorders and inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, arthritis and colitis.
Professor Sinclair said: 'In the history of pharmaceuticals, there has never been a drug that tweaks an enzyme to make it run faster.'
Four thousand synthetic activators, which are 100 times as potent as a single glass of red wine, have been developed - with the best three being used in human trials.
While any drug would be strictly prescribed for certain conditions, Professor Sinclair suggests that one day, they could be taken orally as a preventative.
They could therefore be used in the same way as statin drugs are commonly prescribed to prevent, instead of simply treating, cardiovascular disease.
In animal models, overweight mice given synthetic resveratrol were able to run twice as far as slim mice and they lived 15 per cent longer.
'Some of us could live to 150, but we won't get there without more research.'

It’s always that way at first, but the draw of being able to sell a billion pills for $5 a pop, as opposed to 1,000 pills at $10,000 a pop, always wins out.
Genesis 6:3
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
You've done both?

It’s been shown that aging is mostly environmental in nature. That’s why some 80 year olds act like they’re fifty and other 80 year olds are very decrepit.
If you can minimize the environmental factors, there’s no reason why cell death (the real cause of aging) can’t be slowed down and people live longer as a result.
Gonna confound Obama’s death panels.
We take resveratrol every day via the red wine. After a couple of glasses we feel younger already. :-)
Oh sure...like a wet blanket on a cold rainy night.

I was just goign to say abotu hte same hting- who the hell wants to live that long in a coutnry where our basic consitutional rights are beign taken away almsot daily now? in NY you have goverrnors and mayors trampling all over their citizen’;s rights tellign them what they can eat, what they can and can’t drink, what they can use for self protection on and on and on- in cali you have the government there contemplating banning smoking in people’s own homes for crying out loud- and for htose that think ‘Ther’s no way they can or will enforce it’ think again=- kids will be asked at health exams “Do you parents smokes? Do they smoke in the house?” and if the answer is yes, then law enforcement WILL BE CALLED and sent to the home with an arrest warrant for ‘potential endagering the wealfare of a child’- and you mark my words- there WILL come hte day when health officials WILL ASK kids what they eat at home, and if it’s not wholesome foods or too much junk food- hte parents may very well face similiar charges-
‘Can’t ever happen’? It IS happenign folks- nope- I sure as hell don’t care to live 150 years-

No no no- these scientisits are like little gods- they can build towers that reach way into the heavens- it’s been doen before- oh wait- NM- no it hasn’t
That further got reduced to 70 years, or 80 with a great constitution.
It’s a general rule, obviously there are things you can do to not have your body fail you, and if you avoid deadly accidents,...
I tried messing around with topical applications of estriol cream recently too even though I am not yet menopausal until it sort of dawned on me that even with progesterone balance, extended use could be an nice way to possibly give myself breast cancer. I think I hold the resveratrol until the long-term effects of high doses of are better known.
Meanwhile, you could drink an awful lot of red wine.
Not going to happen if Obama has any say!
Santa Claws?
There’s one huge difference between the rats they use in these studies and the people they ultimately hope will benefit from these drugs - the rats eat food.
Most people eat processed crap that has only a vague resemblance to actual food.
It may be that these drugs might have some benefit, but I’d be very surprised if they’d be powerful enough to the thousands of calories of junk people eat every day.
No economy could sustain any significant population at that extreme age. Look at the situation we have now...
