MIDDLETOWN Lawmakers are considering a measure that would make Connecticut the first state in the nation to mandate universal mental health assessments for school-age children.
Senate Bill 374 one of several relating to mental health policy in the aftermath of the Newtown attack would require all public schoolchildren in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 to undergo a behavioral health screening. The law would also apply to home-schooled children ages 12, 14 and 17. It makes no mention of private or parochial school students.
The assessments would be confidential, the bill says; the results would be shared only with the child's parents.
Public schools already conduct vision and hearing screenings and school nurses periodically check spines for scoliosis. This bill would add mandatory behavioral health assessments to the list.

Something tells me a schoolchild who says they are really another gender won’t be considered mentally unhealthy. Kid who pretend to be cowboys or Superman, however, will be.
Well isn’t this about the most awful thing ever. I think they need a good old-fashioned protest over in Conn. I doubt there will be more than 100 brain-dead supporters of this disgusting bill.
As fate would have it, her dad [who was raised around guns and shooting] had her in to the doc for her annual physical. Without any warning, the doc asked her *if there were any guns in the house?* GD told me later she said: *Not that I would notice.* and that was the end of that.
Her dad, who was in the examining room at the time, told the doc ...it was none of his GD business. They had to change docs, which is unfortunate, but necessary in this day and age.
Later she said, when he asked that, the first thing that popped into her 8 y/o mind was...maybe *they* will come to take away my BB gun. I think she handled herself brilliantly. She knows I carry on our outings, and where a loaded 12g. sits for our home protection.
Spewing coffee..................................... Dang it. Now I gotta clean the screen. 2 funny!!!!
The more I think about this, it’s a shell game. My observations of the PS: Vice-principals [who are normally hired to oversee discipline in the school] do not do so any longer. They pull down salaries of 100K+ for their trouble.
Now the schools have this task shifted to the social worker, psychologist, and Safe School Climate Team Specialists [WTF?} to deal with discipline issues and reduce in discipline referrals.
These sweep it under the rug programs do not address the root cause of PS problems. It’s a shell game b/c no one will step up to the plate any more.
Please pray for us.
LOL... since when has Maine become the *new Texas*? I love it!
“a 5 or 6 year old?”
3 or 4 under to BO plan of universal preschool
it’s abuse.
It’s cmpletely wrong at any age.
How about a mental health evaluation for all Connecticutt (sp?) state legislators?
*That one* is too easy! LOL
Heh. Levity.
At The Peoples Cube, we do NOT equate all liberals with communists. The purpose of this website is to pick up liberal hitchhikers and give them a ride to the communist wonderland - the inevitable end result of their well-meaning policies.
Shouldn’t private school students be assessed? This is going to be struck down in court if it gets anywhere.
Howz ‘bout homeschoolers, while we’re at it. :(
Homeschoolers will be assessed under this stupid law. How come private school students get a break?
Dems are communist vultures. I knew as soon as they brought up the idea of mental health testing to qualify for the second amendment, we were dipping another toe into Soviet waters.
Sane will be defined as being a global Marxist - politically correct. They will harm their thought and belief enemies. This will give them the mission to re-educate the “insane” children just like the Soviet Union.
How many “conservatives” jumped on the bandwagon of Federal qualification for second amendment rights in order to keep us safe from crazy people? The commies/fascists love it! That includes McStupid’s wing of the comrades.
Heh. That means Sidwell Friends School is exempt.
Well, private schools in Connecticut are exempt. Perhaps many Connecticut state legislators send their kids to private schools. What’s good for the goose isn’t good for gander.
>>Perhaps many Connecticut state legislators send their kids to private schools.<<
Of course they do. :(
