The Temptations had gone through years of hitless travail at Motown, working with different producers and different lead singers. Competition at Motown was brutal, and the group finally got a hit in 64 with The Way You Do the Things You Do with Smokey Robinson as producer and Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals. Smokey wrote a tune that he thought would go better with David Ruffin on lead, and it ended up being their signature song. This is the week it made #1.
