In 1965, ABC ran a special on the popular music scene, and one of the items shown was the recording session for this song. That footage seems to have disappeared, which is unfortunate because it’s priceless. It shows string players from the Detroit Symphony laying down the instrumental track for this song.

The Temptations had gone through years of hitless travail at Motown, working with different producers and different lead singers. Competition at Motown was brutal, and the group finally got a hit in ‘64 with “The Way You Do the Things You Do” with Smokey Robinson as producer and Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals. Smokey wrote a tune that he thought would go better with David Ruffin on lead, and it ended up being their signature song. This is the week it made #1.
