The Righteous Brothers had signed with Phil Spector in 1964, and this production was Spector’s masterpiece, featuring the famous Wrecking Crew musicians. Bobby Hatfield was annoyed that he didn’t come in until halfway through the song, and when he asked Spector what he was going to do in the meantime, Spector said, “You can go to the f***ing bank!” The song was written by Spector and the team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and is now considered one of the Songs of the Century. It was on its way down from #1 on March 9, 1965. The middle section of this song is almost a religious experience. That’s Cher among the background vocalists.
