It's long been established that somebody who is 1/4 black is black. Except if he's conservative.

From what I understand, Zimmerman is 1/2 white (his father's side), 3/8 Hispanic, and 1/8 black (his mother's side, which is Peruvian). In the US anyone with any known African ancestry is "black" unless they are Hispanic, in which case the Hispanic label takes precedence.

Zimmerman's grandmother was Afro-Peruvian (one-half black). The media wanted him to be a Southern white racist, so that's how he was initially portrayed, and that could be how the jurors think of him.
