If you asked me that question 30 years ago, I would have said Jeff MacNelly without hesitation.
Not that I was exposed to many options in the pre-Internet dark ages, so my choice may have been driven by lack of knowledge. Nonetheless, MacNelly was a genius with the details, as you can see from these cartoons about IRS complexity and government shutdowns.

Gee, how I miss Al Capp.
Ramirez..
Michael Ramirez... hands down.
Ditto
+1.
Though Chris Muir at http://www.daybydaycartoon.com/, though not strictly speaking a Political Cartoonist, is also very good.
Great minds think alike! :-)
Ramirez, it’s a shame we can’t post his stuff due to copyright.
It ain’t Tom Meyer, who draws for a little read (little Red?) paper in San Francisco.
Delonas.
Actually, I don’t have one...none at all. In fact, I don’t even peruse political cartoons any more. I can get all of that I need from Obama at one of his press conferences or from the Sunday Morning Obama BJ crowd that purports to comment(ate)[for all our verbally challenged no-information voters out there] on political events of the week.
I agree...Ramirez is awesome.
And I agree about Jeff.
Currently, Ramirez . . .years ago, another pair of similar cartoonists “Cox & Forkum”.
Me too. Ramierez is tops!!
No favorite cartoonist... but I sure do thank Pookie for gathering the best of them each weekday for us on his site!
While some artists have some very good cartoons, Michael Ramirez is by and for the very best political cartoonist out there! His are really on target every day!
