Scotland's Pipe and Drums of the Black Watch 3rd Battalion is an elite military regiment whose history stretches back almost three centuries. The precise origins of the group is unknown, however in 1716 a small band of 'hautboys' existed. The band grew in strength during the early part of the 19th century, and by 1838 could boast some 32 performers. Throughout the 19th century the band expanded, until in 1888 there was an establishment of 44. The Pipe and Drums of the Black Watch 3rd Battalion now travels the world, and in recent years has visited Australia, Bermuda, South Korea, France, Switzerland, Italy and of course Scotland.

Their precision marching on any size stage will amaze an audience. I saw them in Sturgis, Michigan many years ago.

I saw the Black Watch Pipes and Drums once about thirty years ago in Washington D.C. It was a great show, but when it was nearly over the Black Watch assembled at one end of the large auditorium, and piping some slow tune, they began to march slowly toward the center. Suddenly, from behind some curtains at the opposite end, out comes the Marine Corps Band marching toward the Black Watch playing Stars and Stripes Forever! By the time they got to that part when the music builds up and then explodes, with the piccolo part floating over all that thundering brass, the Black Watch seemed almost not to be there at all.

Back around 1970 I saw the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch at the Grandfather Mountain, Highland Games.

They were from New Zealand tho so not sure what connection they have to the real ones in Scotland.

It was my great respect for the estimable Sionnsar, and the request of his dear wife, LibreOuMort, that moved me to to undertake the stewardship of this thread.

In recent months, the threads posted have been few, due in part to a dearth of what I considered appropriate subjects, and due in part to my medical issues.

I hope and expect to post threads more frequently henceforth. The memory of Sionnsar and all the great Scots who have gone before us demands no less.
