(Newser) – Ah, Detroit—it's miserable, murderous, and, as of noon local time today, likely officially in a state of financial emergency. Per Mayor Dave Bing, Gov. Rick Snyder is set to declare that emergency today, which is expected to result in Snyder appointing a financial manager who will seize hold of the city's finances, reports the Detroit Free Press. As Reuters explains, that means the state will effectively take over the city, a move that the Free Press notes is "sure to ignite anger."
The state imposed some oversight on the city in April 2012, but Snyder was frustrated by the slow pace of reforms and instituted a review in December; earlier this month, that review team determined that the situation should be labeled an emergency. Detroit currently has $14 billion in long-term liabilities and a deficit of $327 million, a figure that could grow by $100 million by July. Bing didn't divulge details about what Snyder was going to talk about, but said, "I think everybody's got a pretty good idea of what the announcement will be."
Why in Gods Name would they wanna do that?
It’s the only hope Detroit has.
Will of course be denounced as racist for “disenfranchising African-Americans”.
Haha . . . I can hear all those political hacks from the union-infiltrated and entitlement-driven DemoQuack party asking how it came to be that another of its cities is collapsing.
Anyone here know the party affiliation of both the mayor of Detroit and the Gov of the state in the last 20-25 years?
Apparently to root out the massive corruption permeating the place for decades.
Maybe if every Freeper bought one of Detroit’s $1.00 houses, we could move in and take over during the next municipal election! Michigan could go from blue to red electorally, and from red to black financially!
General William Hull had the right idea.
Last I heard, “O” had saved the city of Detroit with the auto bailouts. This according to my lib co-worker. LOL
Kevin....we have a Republican House, Senate, Governor, Sec of state, and Attorney General.
Detroit has an Income Tax.
Heads are exploding in Democratic and union circles around the country because the grownups are in charge and they will make common sense decisions about finances. Thank goodness the Obama Administration is facing budget cuts themselves because they can’t offer Detroit a bailout.
All those fat lazy gov’t employees will either get off their a—es and work hard or get fired.
Worthless union contracts will be cancelled and private firms will be allowed to bid on providing services.
Cushy government pensions will be scaled back dramatically.
Can’t wait to see it happen and hear the howling ...
Meh. I’m in favor of letting the city default on its debt, letting the creditors take anything and everything of value, revoking the city charter, and leaving the place a smoldering festering heap for years to come.
Unfortunately the State will bail the city out - only to be stuck with more corruption, more debt to be paid later on.
Fools.
Okay, so it would have to be retired Freepers. But once the new Detroiters (Is that the proper demonym?) take over, they can eliminate that income tax along with all the other lunacy.
Once again the Makers are forced to pay the way for the Takers. The only thing that will free the Makers will be spilled blood.

So one would hope that not one penny of Michigan money from outside of Detroit will be used to “bail out” the corrupt city. Let them go through a managed bankruptcy with all that entails such as revised contracts with city employees and retirees to include revised pay scales, revised pensions, revised health care coverage.
They need to demolish Detroit and return it to farmland. No amount of emergency CPR can save it. It is a conclave of criminal activity and condemned buildings.
MI started taxing retirement income either this year or last year.
