Don’t forget that public school kids in Texas can be punished for refusing to recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance.
During the last two high school graduations I went to (probably 2008 & 2011) that had either an ‘hispanic’ valedictorian or salutorian much of that person’s speech was in Spanish. Of course, they also recieved LULAC scholarships. I have a VERY strong feeling LULAC encouraged them to give their speech in Spanish.
On the first one, much of the crowd looked uncomfortable and a few even appeared shocked, as was I. The speaker said it was so his parents could understand his words - and I was thinking we just paid taxes for 13 years for this kid to get an education and his parents could’t respect us enough learn enough English in that time to understand what he had to say?
