My grandmother worked for JCPenney until sometime in the early 80s. So I have a soft spot for the company (at least as it was). My grandparents left all sorts of JCPenney items in their house when they passed since she got an employee discount - furnishings, tools, towels, bedding etc. Back when they were competing with Sears, and when Sears still sold quality goods, JCP gave them a good run for their money.

That said, it’s almost comical watching this company crash and burn over the last couple years. It’s like they have a death wish.

It’s sad to see one of the most successful American retailers going down the toilet.

They don’t need a failed marketing “genius” to figure it out. If they hired me for one day, a once very loyal former customer, I could tell what they did wrong and how to correct it. They just don’t get it.

New Coke blunder???

I thought it was a well planned media frenzy with every intent of 'reintroducing' the old product once the free publicity ran its course. I would have thought he would be praised for it.

Sergio Zyman — the marketing exec behind Coca-Cola’s infamous New Coke blunder in 1984.
While Zyman may have been the marketing exec, it was Coke's CEO, Roberto Goizueta, who was primarily responsible.
BTW, a few years after the New Coke fiasco, Goizueta was named to the board of directors of Kodak ... and the rest is history.

They ought to hire the fellow that came up with the Makers Mark brainstorm.

A ton of publicity, it cost them nothing and they look like hero’s for “listening” and aquiescing to their customers desires.

It was marketing genius.

Guess I’d better get to J.C.Penny soon, and stock up on those heavy cotton T-shirts. That was all I ever bought at that store in my lifetime. They always had the best T-shirts be they called Towncraft, or Stafford.

Haven’t shopped at JCP in years, especially since the “gay” ad campaign started. Used to go all the time.
Just got in the mail a promo asking me to please, please, PLEASE shop at JCP!
No way in hell......

If they seriously wanted their company to succeed, they should fire their executive board, and hire:

1) A retired, US military Colonel, Army or Marine, who had commanded a winning combat brigade in combat, but was not political enough to get promoted to Brigadier.

2) A third generation farmer who has successfully managed a 5,000+ acre farm for 10 years.

3) A technologist-scientist, an industrial engineer, a structural engineer, and an Indian IT engineer.

Absolutely exclude anyone with an Ivy League degree, as well as MBAs and attorneys except from extremely conservative schools.

The New Coke ‘fiasco’ has been misreported for years.

New Coke wasn’t nearly the fiasco people like to think. Yes New Coke itself hit the market with a thud, BUT “Classic” Coke returned to much higher sales which had been dropping for years. Probably not the smoothest way ever to revitalize a brand but it did revitalize the brand.
