New Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Wednesday that the United States must engage in the world and work with its allies as he addressed Defense Department employees and service members for the first time as Pentagon chief. “We can't dictate to the world, but we must engage in the world. We must lead with our allies,” Hagel said in his first speech as secretary. “Allies are, as everyone in this room knows, particularly important. No nation — as great as America is — can do any of this alone.

Are civilian family of active duty people somehow forbidden to speak out as are the active duty folks themselves in some situations? Or is just a case of it being possible that such comments might reflect badly on the service member?
Obama’s plan to use a republican as cover to gut the defense department is a bit out the window now since 41 republicans voted against him.
There is no dementia here, he knows exactly what he is doing for der Fuehrer and what he does is of his own accord.
When he was first elected as our senator he stated openly that he was sent to the senate to represent HIS point of view and not those of the Nebraskans who elected him. Arrogant POS, worthless senator, unqualified as hell.
All of the local democrats and many of the local “republicans” are cheering his appointment and swearing in.

I think I won a dinner from this outcome. Honestly, I’d have preferred to go hungry.
I saw, as I assume many here did, Ted Cruz' brilliant interrogation of Hagel during the committee hearing. And Cruz specifically asked Hagel to produce additional documents and evidence, which Hagel first said he would, then did not. Cruz asked to have the vote delayed, but Levin overruled him.
Cruz is very, very smart. I was at first surprised that he didn't speak during the floor debate ( unless I missed it?)..but let's suppose that Cruz has the information..the speeches, the sources of funding for some of the groups that have supported Hagel...
Cruz knows that conservatives MUST start playing political hardball...so, wouldn't it be better to wait until Hagel goes through...THEN release all the damming information. This forces Hagel to resign, and that's a complete embarrassment to Obama and all the Senate Democrats..
One can dream....
