Why Asian-Americans Have Turned Their Backs on the Republican Party
Daily Beast ^ | Feb 26, 2013 | Lloyd Green

Since 2000, Asian-Americans have consistently voted Democratic. In 2008, Asian-Americans gave 62 percent of their vote to Barack Obama. Last November that number jumped to 73 percent even as the president’s margin of victory in the popular vote was cut in half as he garnered a Dukakis-like 41 percent of white voters and slid by more than 13 points among Jewish-Americans.

Sun Yat San was pretty fascinated by the Constitution. The Chicoms and the Kou Min Tang still venerate him at the same memorial in Big China.

We have 320 million we can no longer reliably poll because only 9% of folks queried end up providing a response.

Buried in that 9% are the 5% asians, so to get a poll reflecting asian opinion you'd need a minimum of 20,000 calls ~ and that would give you 90 asian Americans as the basis for figuring out what they all think ~ and odds are good that most of them would be JAs in Hawaii!

I don't think you can get a good poll concerning asian political beliefs in this country.

I don't think you can get a good poll concerning asian political beliefs in this country.

I don't know how most polling firms establish contact with those included in polls. But a few years ago I received a call from Pew Research Center and answered a fair list of questions. They said I was being pre-screened and if selected I'd be included in future public opinion polls. Never heard from them again so I must have been the wrong demographic at that time.

If polling firms are using that approach and then getting agreement from a valid sample of people to participate in future polls, then they might have good samples poll after poll. But if they're trying to use random calls in polls, then it'd definitely be more and more difficult to put together a good sample at any given time due to cell phones, caller ID and all the ways folks now have to avoid calls they don't care to answer.

And I think many of these preference polls by group we see are still largely based on exit polls, which are fairly questionable as to accuracy.

California asians voted 79% for Obama. NY didn’t poll for asians that I can find. The Virginia vote was 3% asians, with 5% of the asian population. It looks to be around 68% for the dems, 11 points less than CA. Texas has around 5% of the asian population, but didn’t do any national exit polling at all that I can find. It would be interesting to know what the asian vote was in solidly republican states, Obama probably still won but by less than the 73% national number, and of course they have low populations in most of them. Unfortunately, very few southern states had exit polling done for asians, or any exit polling at all.

When Asians get rich enough they will turn Republican like the Irish, Poles and Italians and vote for Reagans and the Bushs.

Yep, with Obama getting 79% of the Asian-American vote in California where 29.5% of them live, that definitely would pull the average up for any states where the Asian vote for Dims might have been less overwhelming.

With the exception of black voters, other groups probably tend to reflect the politics in the state where they live to some extent. And also some are probably favorite son voters as Reagan and W did some better among Hispanics, two popular governors from states with large Hispanic populations.

But I still believe that how long a given minority individual or family has been in the US would prove to be the biggest factor in how they vote. And huge numbers of Asians have become new citizens since Reagan, GHWB and Dole who won the Asian vote with just over 50%.

If Christianity has lost in America, then who cares what happens to it.

“But I still believe that how long a given minority individual or family has been in the US would prove to be the biggest factor in how they vote.”

That’s probably a reasonable theory. I think you would probably see it work for minorities like with religion and practicing/nonpracticing. If there was an area that more frequently had a group move to it, it would still be hard to see with a national %. I think I recall that the next presidential election there will be even less states exit polled. Not that exit polling is any sort of absolute indicator.

The biggest factor is if they are, or become, Protestant Christians, the only people in America who vote conservative.

Even with Hispanics, Hispanics are close to a 50/50 republican vote, as long as they have become Protestant Christians.

Does that mean you’re giving up on politics if that’s the case?

My enemy is the enemies of Christianity and of America, I don’t think that we share the same enemies.

You haven’t defeated Christian America yet.

With 40 years experience under my belt let me say this about that, statistical reliability is probably not inherent in the exit poll concept.

They are propaganda!

People should embrace Christianity for Christianity, and America for America. There is a difference between that and “Christian America”.

No there isn’t, and that is seen in the vote, the only people who vote American are Christians, and Protestant Christians at that.

The non-religious are massively leftist, in fact are the core of the left.

Sun was a “Big Man” - the Chinese always venerate leaders who were “Big Men”. They are much less sanguine in real life about concepts like We The People.

The democracy movement that ended at Tiananmen Square was very instructive about how little even those in favor of change really understood how such political ideas would work in their society.

Wife and I were just discussing the Chinese self-identity thing the other day. It got back to what the Chinese in all Chinese communities think of freedom, and it's still pretty much the same view you see in the Bandits of the Marsh, or even that movie about Genghis Khan.

First, there's the Center ~ which is pretty much the same now as it was under the Quin emperor EVERYTHING is at the center, and all authority flows from the center whether it's the price of thousand year old eggs today, or what print dress is suitable, or even how sharp must an executioners sword be.

Americans certainly understand that concept ~ that all regulatable items must be measured against the exact same scale!

Freedom, however, in the Chinese view, cannot exist at the center, or even near the center, but it must be somewhere outside the scope of the center ~ maybe in Mongolia, or the mountains, or in fishing boats off-shore. The bandits of the marsh are free ~ they exercise total control over all things that count ~ what color to wear, what shoes should look like, pants or gown, horse or cow ~ ride, guide or plough ~ and they live in the swamp where the center only intrudes infrequently, and only under guard.

All Chinese are always looking to the center, wherever they are, and understanding where the swamp might be ~ for escape perhaps, or to eat better.

It's a yin/yan deal as well. The power at the center thrives on the liberty at the periphery. The liberty at the periphery thrives on the narcissism at the center which is too busy to bother the periphery!

There are variations ~ but wherever there's a dominant Chinese cultural entity around you will find people actually thinking this way, or you can go to New York and actually find a mayor who thinks he's a successor to the Quin.

It's at this point I like to contrast all of that to the Russian viewpoint ~ they actually adopted the centrum/periphery dichotomy and kept it intact through Communism. That way when the elites had tired of being Commies, that Commie stuff fell away and the normal stuff began to work without Communism's inherent inefficiencies and abuses.

At the same time the Russians never quite grasped the Chinese concept of there never being any freedom at the Center ~ Sholzenytsen in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich express it quite well ~ that the Russians are beneficiaries of a powerful foreign countercultural called Christianity which understands that when you are compelled to carry a man's coat, you are exercising freedom when you also carry his other goods for him. Ivan put up with the Gulag. He found his liberty in the holes in the process ~ for him it was always a good day to die ~ bringing in another totally alien philosophy from the wilds of America.

With the concept fully in play one day Gorbachev and Yeltsin woke up and said 'we can get rid of this cr*p' and did so. It's not perfect, but they didn't need to move to the swamps like the Chinese need to do to understand how to be free. They'd been practicing it all their lives.

It's encouraging that the Chinese community in Penang keeps Sun's home in good shape. He had, in fact, lived in those swamps in the greater periphery of the Overseas Chinese. Wasn't only American ideas he took with him to the Chinese people. Truly a Big Man

From the article:

These days, the GOP strikes Asian-Americans, along with many other Americans, as hostile to science and modernity.

Because they are all scientists? And the Republicans are so hostile to modern science?

No. Look at where Asian-Americans tend to live. It's usually in the "blue states" -- or at least it has been until recently. And Asian-American in those states have swung to the Democrats along with voters of other races with similar education and income levels.

Republicans = White, Western values, Christianity

Despite our vaunted ‘post racial’ goals, we’ll never get there when one party will take from the dominant race and culture and give to the others, and tell the others they deserve it.

In the end, it is, and it will always be about race. Western “white” Culture has come the closest to changing this - even while it’s failures where honestly chronicled in history.
