Comcast 'a threat to the open Internet,' former Obama adviser argues
Dailly Caller ^ | 2/25/13 | Anne Hobson

A former adviser to President Barack Obama criticized Comcast’s acquisition of NBC Universal as evidence of consumer-hostile business practices in the communications industry, Ars Technica reports. Susan Crawford, a visiting professor at Harvard, served as Obama’s special assistant for science, technology and innovation policy.

In her book “Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age,” Crawford implicates AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner, Apple, Google and Microsoft, as well as Comcast. She states that these companies “tacitly cooperate by carving out their separate areas of expertise,” resulting in overpriced products and services for consumers.

Crawford argues for increased government involvement in the communications industry.

Timothy B. Lee, reporter for Ars Technica and adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute, believes that Crawford’s “broader critique of the modern media landscape misses the mark.” The broadband market may suffer from collusion, Lee contends, but the wireless, media and online sectors of the economy are more competitive and consumer-friendly than Crawford admits.

Around here the “Comcast” name was so reviled by consumers they’ve switched to an alias: “Xfinity”

From Feb 20...

Democrat David L. Cohen of Comcast to back GOP's Corbett

Few are more steeped in Pennsylvania party politics than Democratic power broker David L. Cohen.

The Comcast executive vice president has long been known as the go-to fund-raiser for Democratic candidates. He is credited as the chief strategist behind former Gov. Ed Rendell's successful political career, and President Obama in 2011 described him as a "great friend."

Now, just as the 2014 governor's race is beginning to heat up, Cohen says he will likely back Republican Gov. Corbett's reelection campaign.

I consider Comcrap a liberal company, but I have been hoping not as liberal as NBC. It will be seen in the coming months if Comcrap adopts more NBC policy or changes. There have been recent reports where Comcrap has been denying local gun related business from advertising. They site this as consistent policy with the NBC-Universal acquisition. If this becomes a network ban of gun related advertising there is a bigger problem. If the NBC-Universal policy changes in the coming months the company is moving in the correct direction.

The real barometer is what Comcrap does with MSNBC. If there is a shake up there, maybe, just maybe things are heading in the correct direction. But beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. MSNBC could easily tone down their presentation and be just as liberal as they are today. Simply change a few faces based on ratings, and add some new unknown drones that more subtly espouse the same liberal bull crap.

I call them Scamcast.

My only real problem is the fact that I pay for 195 channels of crap and only consistently watch about 5. Most of it is like junk mail.

you mean the same comcast who is banning all gun related ads?

I was at my local gun store Saturday and they were talking about how a comcast rep told them they could not have any advertising that showed a modern firearm or “bullets” as it may scare someone. They told the comcast rep to stick it and cancelled their service.

Comcast would not let me cancel. It was the old America Online Trick. I had to call them many times over a period of 90 days. I spoke to several different people at a time from India to who knows where and waited on the phone for them to pick up.

They kept saying all clear, you’ve been cancelled. And the next month i would get another bill.

I finally went on a marathon and would not give up. I pestered them for days until they finally canceled my service for good.

Trust me, MSNBC’s on air personalities are reflective of Comcast’s corporate leadership, the supervisors too! If Comcast were a pyramid, it would be upside down!

LOL, yeah... I’ll believe a former Ubama advisor.
Let the scum keep blabbing and writing - - it makes it easy to know what the best course of action is, ie., the opposite of whatever they say.

As much as I loathe Crapcast, I can see a day when they start going after other ISPs in an effort to control the internets....

We have Brighthouse (formerly Time Warner Cable - I refer to them as Dimhouse).

The good thing is we also have access to ATT U-Verse so I can play them off against each other.

Every time I get a rate increase I either switch (or threaten to switch) and get a “deal”.

It’s kind of a headache but I’m retired and have time to play the game.
