An NFL Insider Says NFL Teams Want To Know If Manti Te'o Is Gay

After facing the media over the weekend at the NFL Combine, most seem to believe that Manti Te'o has successfully moved on from the fake girlfriend story and that it will have little impact on his status in the NFL draft. However, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com says Te'o's sexuality is still a concern for NFL teams.

Florio appeared on "The Dan Patrick Show" Monday and said flatly, "teams want to know if Manti Te'o is gay," calling it "the elephant in the room." Florio adds that it should not make a difference, but says we have to "step aside from the rest of reality and walk into the unique industry that is the NFL."

As Florio points out, teams probably can't directly ask Te'o that question during their interviews with the former Notre Dame linebacker. But that won't stop teams from trying to find out.

Of course, for some teams, Te'o's sexuality may be less important than just being prepared and knowing what potential media storms they will have to deal with if they were to draft Te'o. And for some teams, the fear of that potential media storm might be enough to skip Te'o's name in the April draft.

He wouldn’t make any team in the SEC.
Undersized, slow, and can’t get himself squared up in front of running backs.

"I was in Houston this past weekend for the annual World Championship BBQ and my response to every single one of the TA&M fans that wanted to brag about beating Alabama this past season was “when you get even one crystal football to bring back to College Station we’ll talk then”......most laughed and hugged me but a few got a little snippy! I guess they didn’t like my Nick Chick houndstooth ball cap! LOL RTR!"

I retired from Texas Instruments in Houston.
One of my VP bosses there had a degree in 'WAR' from A&M. I like A&M.

Bill Parcells would agree. He had a thing or two to say about “stuck on stupid”.

When I first this story on the radio I assumed his girl friend was really Phil Hendrie.

The TRUTH, if ever I've heard it.

His performance against Alabama told me everything I needed to know. He'll be a BUST at the pro level no matter who may be foolish enough to draft him.

I have not seen one coach or OC criticize his beliefs (although quite a few talking heads, some players and also former players have) - but I have seen several cite his stats as being problematic.

And contemporary sports is, you will agree, obsessed with statistical analysis these days.

Here's a different take on his statistics.

Tebow's success due to production and protection, not magic

Women’s pro sports would have to shut down if that were the case.

We’re talking NFL....not “pro” lezbos with the ability of an average HS boys team that no one cares to watch.

Undersized, slow, and can’t get himself squared up in front of running backs.

He's not undersized.

He's about the same height and weight as Dane Fletcher or Terrell Manning or Darius Fleming or Ray Lewis.

It's the slowness, not the size, that is the problem. If he could get in the RB's path in time, he could probably stop them - but every decent RB has at least a step on him.

The best part about the Tebow in Denver discussion is that he really was not all that great there either.

7-4 as a starter. OK, seems pretty good until you drill down. Not team in the division finished over .500 so he was playing pretty mediocre teams for a good chunk of their schedule. 3 overtime wins scoring fewer than 20 points as a team. Only twice as a starter (regular season) did the Broncos score more than 20 points, against Minnesota and Oakland (the 21st and 29th defenses in the league).

Completed fewer than 50% of his passes.
Denver’s O was 23rd in the league.
Tebows QB rating at 72.9 ranked 28 out of 34 qbs rated.

He was a great story, but pretty spectacularly mediocre as an NFL QB.

I think he could have been a contributor to the Jets, just not at QB (although Tebows 2011 rating was 6 points higher than Sanchex 2012).

This sounds like racist or homophobic discrimination...or something like that. I too am appalled that NFL teams would stoop so low.

Rest assured I am second to no one in being appalled by this BLATANT HOMOPHOBIA

Is Manti Te'o gay? Well .. let's see what we have 'so far'. Now I don't care if he is gay or not -- but -- the team that drafts him better care. A whole fricken lot! As if he is gay he'd be even a bigger distraction than he already is and distraction causes dissension. Which is the last thing any team needs (ref: NY Jets), especially if they're a playoff team, or rebuilding/regrouping for a run in a year or two (ref: Da Bears).

But one thing I don't get is how gaga teams were over him as being an NFL Middle Linebacker. He's too small, he's only 6'-1"(& 241#). And the way football fudges players height (and weight) I really doubt he's 6'-1". So he can't play LB, especially 'Mike', and he's to heavy to be a safety. If any position would be right for him it would be Fullback, which most teams don't use any longer and he'd have to be able to catch a pass. Can he?

Anyway, the way things seem to be going downhill for him at light-speed he'll be drafted late, really really late -- if he's drafted at all. So I hope he can make it on his $60,000 a year salary as a Graphic Designer.

Yeah, I might be.

Naive, that is.

The truth will come out in time, I suppose.
