WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- House Speaker John Boehner will hold a press conference at 4 p.m. Eastern to discuss the across-the-board budget cuts known as the sequester, his office said. Without a deal, $85 billion in gradual budget cuts will begin on Friday,

To put this in perspective: $85 billion (85 + 9 zeros) vs. $16 trillion debt (16 + 12 zeros) and represents 0.005 percent. That's chump change, Speaker Boehner. Bonehead hasn't earned his reputation as a drunken, blubbering, cave-at-all-costs dolt for obvious reasons.

I saw a poll yesterday that stated that 83% thought we need had a SPENDING PROBLEM. Not 51% or 61%. 83%

It was not even close. The other 17% probably do not even know that we have a debt problem. However, they know who got kicked off of American Idol last time.

The cat is out of the bag. People have had to cut their own spending and are sick and tired of the govt. not doing the same. The trouble is that noboby(not even here on FR)wants it to come out of THEIR wallet.

“This reality show is almost as convincing as pro wrestling.’

I respect pro wrestling more than the president-slime, the senate-slime, or some of the house-slime.

At least those guys actually have to be in shape...and they stick to their script.

Boner and the GOP as a whole needs to stand strong. They have the winning hand here, as long as they don’t back down.

Yeah, sure the Obamaites are going to pin the “blame” on the GOP, but as the increasing hysterical “look what’s going to be cut!!!” doomsday predictions show, the public at large doesn’t care.

What’s more, these dire predictions put more pressure on the Democrats to cave, because they absolutely cannot afford for these dire predictions to be a bust. When they are, it blows apart the entire liberal worldview of “we can’t cut government at all or disaster will occur!” Joe Six-Pack is just going to say “hmm... looks like we could cut government after all. How about another 1%?” [Yes, I know these “cuts” are basically fictional, but let’s not confuse the low-info voters more than we have to.]

85 billion is what % of the 4 or 5 trillion $ federal gov budget?

And the news media is making this seem like Armageddon( same as with the other fake crisis the “fiscal cliff”)

the media and democrats/obama won't even compromise on these small cuts.

We don't need a few % points cut in spending we need to abolish government agencies starting with the EPA

look even if we had 25% across the board cuts, a trillion$ per year, although good won't do as good as completely and forever eliminating the EPA ( and the laws that authorize it). while EPA budge is only a few billion the damage that the EPA does to the energy sector, oil drilling, fracking, coal power plants , nuclear power plant development etc. is very damaging to the economy. if the U.S. is able to provide cheap energy that will lower gasoline prices, energy prices for businesses and people etc.

We need to start talking about eliminating agencies and laws not cutting a few % points which we never get anyway

"So far at least, I don't think Boehner plans to cave. I think Obama's gambit to blame Republicans into folding and raising taxes isn't working as planned...yet. The reason is because the public doesn't seem to care. The public has reacted to these dire predictions with a collective ho-hum. "

I see it as you do. A bluff too far.

Boehner will propose a bill that will allow the President and the agencies greater flexibility in how the the cuts will be made. At least that is the plan. The cave comes later.

Wish I could agree. We have seen this train wreck before.

Boehner will talk tough and probably let the Sequester deadline pass. The kenyan will brow beat the GOP for a day or two and then McConnell will pull out the fake cut deal they have in reserve. The deal will be fake cuts for real tax increases. Total victory for the Dems.

All this posturing by Boehner is BS for the GOP base. I don’t buy it at all. They will sell us out again. They have never, ever strongly opposed Obama. Why would they start now, on this?

I think Obama’s (and the news media’s) gambit to blame Republicans into folding and raising taxes isn’t working as planned...yet.

the news media keeps playing chicken little “fiscal cliff”, “sequester” , blah blah blah

hope people see the liberal media for what it is

hope boner sees how the media is manipulating him

I hope you’re wrong but I suspect you’re right.

Finally, the Republicans have an opportunity to hoist Baraq on his own petard. He’s responsible for the sequester. Proper message management and standing firm - for once - gives them a chance to make a legitimate statement about what Der Leader has done to this country.

And it might quiet the base for a little bit. Maybe. c

4:00? I guess he needs that long to apply his tan.

Waiting for the Dow to close (which tells me he's already quivering in fear and getting ready to cave)

I don’t think the GOP will fold, at least I hope not. Hopefully Boehner will lay this at the feet of the President.

As long as it comes out of everyone’s wallet, including the lazy bama-phone crowd and the corrupt public workers I say bring it on!

My guess is that the House will pass a bill giving Obama an option where to “cut” the $85 billion.
It may not be a bad move.

There are no ‘cuts’. Only in DC is a slight lowering of a projected increase labeled as a cut.

Yep. We're going to spend more next year then this year even with these so called cuts.
There are no cuts. They're just "holding back" 2% less of their spending increases.

It's all theater. The politicians, no matter who they are, will never give up their gravy train.

They got more money from us. Period. That's all they wanted. "Now let's just put all this behind us an move on".

If it's at 4PM, it's after the stock market closes. So whatever Boehner says, it's probably not going to be good for the markets.

I see the Dow is red now, so I'm holding out hope that it means he's not caving.
