Key Republicans say Chuck Hagel now likely to be confirmed
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | February 17, 2013 | Brad Knickerbocker

If nothing else, the congressional break for the week of Presidents’ Day is a cooling-off period for the fight over former Sen. Chuck Hagel’s nomination to be secretary of defense.

Questions about President Obama’s handling of the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, which killed four Americans, including the US ambassador – an issue, by the way, which Mr. Hagel had nothing to do with – are being answered to the apparent satisfaction of Republicans … at least to the point where they’re willing to end their de facto filibuster of Hagel’s nomination.

Sen. Graham, along with Sen. John McCain, led the opposition to Hagel in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“The president isn’t done with Benghazi,” McDonough said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday. “He’s demanded of us, since that night, to find out exactly what happened, and to make every reform needed to ensure it does not happen again.”

The politics of the Hagel nomination are obvious to those aware of election cycles – particularly regarding Sen. Graham, who faces reelection next year and the likelihood of a challenge from his right (as did Sen. McCain in 2010).

“Graham's antics have as much to do with events in Columbia, S.C., as with events in Washington,” writes Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank. “His sentiments are no doubt genuine, but the ferocity with which he has been attacking the Obama administration – taking a high-profile role on Benghazi, Susan Rice, Hagel and gun control – are helping him to repel a tea party primary challenge at home.”

There had not be a single member of the GOP that votes for this traitor.

If any do, we must see to it that they are GONE in their next primary.

Graham gives great deference to the President? Why? When the Democrats did not like a man, they blocked him. But Graham refuses; takes Hagel at his word, despite evidence that the man’s performance before the committee was so two-faced.

DeMint should get in touch with him and send him a list of South Carolinians who want his job.

Someone or some entity has subverted almost all of our leadership and incessantly attacks those they can’t compromise. We are on the edge of destruction and/or slavery.

Traitors. Not just to Conservatives and the GOP, but to the United States of America.

Hagel is NOT qualified. He is the WRONG man for the job for so many very valid reasons... any one of which should disqualify him.

And Republicans have no backbone.

I think the “Party of Stupid” is definitely the appropriate title!

And the rot, cancer and corruption just festers and spreads further.

This nomination by Bronco Bama was one of the most cynical and sinister appointments he has yet called up. He co-opts the Republicans by getting one of the most anti-Israeli former Senators ever in Washington, who is also a nominal “Republican”, jockeyed and levered through the confirmation process, so he can claim “bipartisan” foreign policy when the Muslim Brotherhood makes their next attempt to annihilate the Israeli state, and the US steps in to “help” in this effort, in a pretense of “even-handedness”.

Darned right the Israelis believe they have been royally shafted. Just enough of the Senate Republicans are too gullible and/or STUPID to take a principled stand.

The abyss yawns. No doubt, with boredom, as this has played out before.

Yeah, Hagel’s a done deal. The GOPe has already shaken hands on the deal. I imagine they got Brennan in the process as well, with a promise of more cooperation re: Bengazi (which won’t happen).

First - The (R) party is TOTALLY worthless. Secondly - If he is not confirmed Big Ears sends another more crazy than Hagel & what then will the (R) scum do but confirm. It’s win win for the commies & lose lose for the idiot RINOs. Sadly this will be the continuation for the rest of my life.

Agree. We are just about, if not already, there.

Well, which is it? Is his name going to be withdrawn (As according to another thread) or is he going to be confirmed?

Well of course he’ll be confirmed. Anyone think the GOP was actually on the sie of America? Oh, there are a few to be sure, but the GOP elite are trying to marginalize them as fast as they can.

Sad.
