There is certainly no ‘waste not, want not’ badge for Girl Scouts of America, at least not in Southern California where over 13,000 boxes of the organization’s famous cookies were bulldozed to bits in a warehouse as bulldozer operators gleefully yelled ‘Goodbye girl scout cookies!’
After the May incident, when the cookies were sent off to a landfill, leaders of area food banks are up in arms about the so-called service organization's wastefulness.
Bruce Rankin, Executive Director of Santa Monica’s West Side Food Bank, watched footage from CBS 2 in Los Angeles, and was shocked as two heavy-duty construction vehicles repeatedly trounce through huge mounds of bright purple cookie boxes
Rankin’s organization serves young children, the working poor, the disabled, and other needy groups in Sothern California. They’re supplied through food donations, but must purchase around half their food to meet demand.
‘We would gladly accept the cookies,’ Rankin said, still awed by the video he’d seen. ‘They would probably disappear as fast as any product we have here.’ The cookies, which were well within their expiration dates, were traced to the San Gorgonio Council of the Girl Scouts in Redlands, California.

Dirty little secret. If you turn in food that’s “expired”, even by a day, the food bank will kindly thank you for it, and immediately dispose of it - regardless of studies that show sealed food containers are good for years, even decades, beyond their “expiration date”.
In this case, they were even expired.
This episode should be retitled: The Purge of the Samoas:

Not this household. I can't afford to buy it in the first place much less waste it later. With 50% of the food going to waste, that's like throwing half your paycheck out the window. It's ridiculous and we're having to pay for it.

Actually, I only buy GS cookies to palliate coworkers. I’d much rather have home-made pie.
Our local supermarkets throw out expired baked goods and deli food every day, and so does the Walmart.
You would think they’d have a rough idea what percentage goes unsold and gets trashed — and cut back accordingly.
If they can’t do that, they could always donate that percentage to the local food pantry, an hour before they’re required to dump it in the trash.
But they don’t. These items go on clearance racks after a few days, and then to the dump. Stupid, inefficient, wasteful, AND sinful.
You Betcha! “What is best in life?” Well, besides that ‘crushing your enemies’ stuff, Thin Mints are a CLOSE second. :)
If they gave them away, i would cheapen the value of the brand, thus making it more difficult to sell so few cookies for such a high price.
You know they were not contaminated. This is about money. If they GIVE them away then people will wait and not buy them. This is why TONS of bakery products are trashed daily. I see it myself and was told that they trash instead of discount because they want people to buy full price and not wait for end-of-day sales. Girl Scout cookies are overpriced for the amount you get. They`re pricing themselves out of business. Buy nearly a pound of Oreos for the same price as 8oz of GS cookies.

You do realize this is a fund raiser program and not an attempt to compete at retail with the Nabiscos of the world....
Since they over spent and bought too many cookies and can afford to bury them, guess they don’t need money, this move shows they have enough.

Name! Price no object. I would chase a Girl Scout up a tree for those.
Sounds to me like the GS returned as many cookies as they could without being charged for them. From there, it would be up to the bakery to donate them, not the GS.
But a bakery story probably isn’t as sensationalistic as a GS story.
They weren’t Thin Mints, They were Saomoa’s and Do Si Do’s.

In the case of the mints, I prefer to think of it as holding hostages for ransom. But when it comes to chocolate, in general, I have always been a communist. As Proudhon observed, "Property of chocolate is theft."
