WASHINGTON As the Senate edged toward a nasty filibuster vote on Chuck Hagels nomination to be defense secretary, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, sat silent and satisfied in the corner of the chamber his voice robbed by laryngitis as he absorbed what he had wrought in his mere seven weeks of Senate service.
Mr. Hagel, a former senator from Mr. Cruzs own party, was about to be the victim of the first filibuster of a nominee to lead the Pentagon. The blockade was due in no small part to the very junior senators relentless pursuit of speeches, financial records or any other documents with Mr. Hagels name on them going back at least five years. Some Republicans praised the work of the brash newcomer, but others joined Democrats in saying that Mr. Cruz had gone too far.
Without naming names, Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, offered a biting label for the Texans accusatory crusade: McCarthyism.
It was really reminiscent of a different time and place, when you said, I have here in my pocket a speech you made on such and such a date, and, of course, nothing was in the pocket, she said, a reference to Senator Joseph R. McCarthys bloody pursuit of communists in the 1950s. It was reminiscent of some bad times.
In just two months, Mr. Cruz, 42, has made his presence felt in an institution where new arrivals are usually not heard from for months, if not years. Besides suggesting that Mr. Hagel might have received compensation from foreign enemies, he has tangled with the mayor of Chicago, sandbagged the Senates third-ranking Democrat on national television, voted against virtually everything before him

The knives are out for Cruz. This is the second publication attacking him for extremism today.
Another ‘view from the extreme left’ editorial by the NYT.
But when the internet flasher Anthony Weiner did it, he was just down with the struggle of the common man. The NYT is beneath contempt.
It’s too bad the NY Slimes never did an article on the “very junior” Senator from Illinois and his “bomb-throwing” first term as their bogus president. November 6th might have turned out a lot differently.
How come the fake Indian snide Lizzy never gets labeled as such?
Cruz is going to be seriously targeted by the MSM. Interesting to see what happens.
Don’t worry. It’ll just make him that much more popular in Texas. Texans love a good fight.
What's with this "very junior" nonsense from that liberal tabloid? Only to union goons (seniority) and liberal colleges (tenure) is the length of service important. C'mon Times, just go ahead and call him a n00b if you're going to do such a transparent hit piece.
It's a disgrace what's happened to Adolph Ochs' newspaper. It actually did have some semblance of integrity when the old man ran it decades and decades ago.
These articles demonstrate why both the republican and democrat parties do all they can to prevent real conservatives from getting into office. They prefer dullards like David Dewhurst and Mitch McConnell, who drone on like old politicians.
While Paul, Lee, DeMint, Rubio, etc. move people from their seats with excitement. They don’t care about “the way things are done,” they’re going to say what needs to be said and do what needs to be done.
Using Alinsky tactics against the Borkers just really gets their goat. As usual, if you’re taking flak, you’re over the target and doing damage.
ONCE AGAIN the NY Slimes have gone ahead and validated my tagline. Oh, how I wish I had a dollar for every time they did that. Oh well.
A very junior newspaper named the New York Times is having a hissy fit because a real man and a real conservative Senator from Texas speaks his mind and is winning hearts and influencing people. That’s the real story.
They are scared of a Republican that will finally stand up to them therefore, they must destroy. If Repbubs had always stood up to them, we wouldn’t have this problem. Cruz is right in what he is doing. All the spineless Repubs up there should be as persistant as he is. If so, the dems would not have gotten away with running all over them for years.
So far, I like his style! He wasn’t sent to the Senate to do the bidding of the GOP, McConnell, Harry Reid and certainly not the usurping bastard in the oval office! He was sent to do the bidding of the people of his state, Texas, and ALL members of congress should keep that in mind!
The OLD grey fishwrap is in high dungeon! Hey nyt! Calling a hispanic a "bomb-thrower" is RACIST!
Well done Senator Cruz! You know you are directly over the target when you're taking a lot of flak!
The way the media (ie: the Democrats) are going after Rubio and Cruz indicates just how scared they are that these Latino Republicans could pick up some big followings.
“offered a biting label for the Texans accusatory crusade: McCarthyism.”
Joe McCarthy was right.
The communists, using Edward R. Morrow, ruined him in order to stop him.
Had we listened and supported him...our country would never have sunk to it’s current state.
Cruz had better tone it down. Barbara Boxer does not like his tactics. Cruz needs to reach across the aisle and make friends. /s
As someone who is well versed in the McCarthy era and the treatment of McCarthy, one can say the New York Times is nothing, if not consistent.
The language is the same. My rule of thumb is, if the NYT villifies someone, that person probably loves Freedom, Justice and The American Way. If the NYT loves someone, they are an enemy of this country.
Pretty simple, works 100% of the time.
