MOSCOW -- The Russian Academy of Sciences is estimating the meteor that streaked into the skies over the Ural Mountains and caused shock waves that injured more than 400 people weighed about 10 tons (11 tons avoirdupois).
The academy said in a statement hours after the Friday morning fall that the meteor entered the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above ground.
The fall caused explosions that broke glass over a wide area. The Emergency Ministry says more than 500 people sought treatment after the blasts and that 34 of them were hospitalized.

It’s highly unlikely you will end up seeing some sort of impressive crater; after a bolide detonates you get a lot of small pieces that reach a fairly low terminal velocity in freefall, and just sort of go kerplunk (incidentally, they land at room temperature from cooling while falling, so no fires.)
Incidentally there now is apparently a video of a burning natural gas crater in Azerbaijan (since a well accident in 1971) that is making the rounds as a supposed crater from this; don’t be fooled.
My saying is “If it’s decaf, it’s not coffee”
I’ve watched ‘Superman’ one too many times.;)
Someone's trying to hoax with a crater without a trace of snow in sight for miles. Might be the same video.
This is literally what duck and cover is about. If you survive the initial heat wave of an explosion you need to get down and not go looking. Especially near glass. Depending on the distance it could take easily 60 seconds. It would need to be a very high yield blast to do damage that far away, but you never know.
I have had some bizarre experiences while on “vacation”, (Losing all my documents in Mexico, Emergency landing of a 757 which included a ride on the slide, riding out a hurricane on Kauai, My Harley breaking down in Baltimore...scariest of ALL!) but I have never been imprisoned on a ship.
“The trajectory of the Russian meteorite was significantly different than the trajectory of the asteroid 2012 DA14, making it a completely unrelated object. Information is still being collected about the Russian meteorite and analysis is preliminary at this point. In videos of the meteor, it is seen to pass from left to right in front of the rising sun, which means it was traveling from north to south. Asteroid DA14’s trajectory is in the opposite direction, from south to north.”

May have issue connecting to spaceweather, they have been iffy all morning.
lol, thanks!
Well, meteorology *is* weather science....
Not to mention new meteor insurance policies to save us from "astronomical losses." Naturally at astronomical prices.
There will turn out to be a LOT of landing sites, and that may not have been the biggest piece. It was just obvious because it hit lake ice. A lot of the other pieces will just be embedded in the ground without a crater and no other apparent changes in the landscape.
And the worst part is this: mental image of the character Guile from the coin op game “Street Figter II” yelling “Sonic BOOM!” as the glass flies.
You have to see the impact pics from the Daily Mail at #226. Best people have a come to Jesus Christ moment sooner rather then later.
It is a reminder of Revelation 8:10-11. Warning signs and birth pangs? Preview of things to come eventually. It is written. Maranatha:)
Revelation 8:10-11
“Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck
Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.”
Here are weather satellite images of the smoke train...

Wonder what the altitude was.
