Carnival Triumph Tow Rope Breaks, Prolongs Passengers’ Misery
Consumerist ^

Posted on 02/14/2013 4:33:20 PM PST by SMGFan

The passengers of the Carnival Triumph (probably) never imagined that they’d get to extend their trip by several days. They certainly didn’t picture themselves living like 19th-century steerage passengers, if 19th-century steerage passengers had cans of Pringles and defecated in plastic bags.

The cruise ship, as you may recall, had an engine room fire on Sunday, stranding the ship in the Gulf of Mexico with minimal power, sanitation, and access to hot food. If the passengers of the Triumph needed anything, it was for their return to shore to be delayed even further. Naturally, earlier this afternoon the rope attaching the ship to the tugboat that’s bringing it to the port of Mobile. That held up the slow, slow voyage for about an hour until the rope could be repaired. Towing a giant ship is a slow process, and they’re due at the port of Mobile sometime between 10 p.m. and midnight. Passengers are now close enough to shore that they can wave signs at CNN’s helicopters and post to Twitter and Instagram.

Just heard a guy interviewed on Fox via his cell phone. He was asked if he would take advantage of the free tickets being offered to the passengers as well as cash.

To his credit, he said SURE! He had nothing but praise for the crew members who were trying to accomodate all the 4,000 passengers during this horrendous ordeal.

I don't care what anyone says, you can't forsee every possible thing that can go wrong on a cruise ship, all you can do is have a plan to deal with whatever happens. And in this case, it sounds like the cruise line was doing just that.

Unfortunately, I suspect the majority of the passengers are going to try to take advantage of the "legal lottery" here.......

Exactly what I was thinking. Considering the population, the number and the panic... No way

Carnival = Chuck E Cheese of the high seas. Just add your own fight videos.

One screwup in the engine room & it’s seagoing Lord of the Flies. No thanks.

After TWA 800, I don’t fly commercially, either. If I can’t drive there, I don’t need to go there. And my CCW “etc” goes with me. I flew 250k+ miles/yr worlwide for Hertz RAC and NYC ad agencies, back in the 70s & 80s, and that was more than enough for this lifetime. LOL.

They’re getting towed around? That’s a shore excursion for $125 in the Bahamas.

This is a big ship and the deck is several stories above the sea. It has no equipment to do a ship to a ship transfer.

The only way I could see to do it would be to cast off the passengers in lifeboats and have other ships present recover the passengers from the boats. 4,000 passengers floating around in lifeboats? It would be like herding cats, assuming no weather blows up. Bottom line is attempting a transfer would needlessly expose the passengers to safety hazards.

If so send them over.

No matter how well Carnival handles the passengers in refunds, etc., they still have 4000 people that will be telling that story to at least 10 people of how bad it was. This is basic customer service math so now there are 44,000 people strongly biased against choosing Carnival for a cruise or even going on a cruise at all.

We seem to have some carriers at loose ends. Maybe one of them?

From what I read, the sanitary conditions are so bad that when the captain sounds the horn it makes a sound like a whoopee cushion.

Evacuation would have been dangerous, though some ill passengers have been evacuated by helo.

As the ship enters Mobile Bay, cell phones should begin to work. The passengers will be able to see land on both sides, encouraging some, yet it is a long way up the Bay.

Its chilly in Mobile, 53F, & breezy. Down to 37F tomorrow AM. Standing/sleeping on deck is gonna get real uncomfortable as the night progresses. Hope these folks have some warm clothes.

Mobile Infirmary offered a triage station at port arrival but Carnival turned them down. After a week living in a cesspool, maybe feeling a little ill, I might want someone to take a quick look at me & give me some good advice.

I was just thinking. What will they do when they get to Mobile? I have been to those docks and I doubt they have much facilities.

Maybe they can get exterior power and get the ship’s systems to operate.

I have a good friend of mine from High School on this ship. Can’t wait to talk to her.

One thing I learned in the Navy if I didn’t learn anything else: you don’t pull a big ship by a string!
