Chuck Hagel will not be defense secretary this week.
The Republican filibuster proving unbreakable, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-NV) moved up a now symbolic cloture vote to be held at 4:15 on Thursday. Three Republicans said they would ultimately vote to allow a final vote on Hagels nomination, but not until after next weeks recess.
Thats too bad, said Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who called the delay a mistake....

Wonder what pork they're holding out for? Only Harry Reid knows...
What 3 “GOP-e ers” I see Johanns and Collins(=2) who else?
Send Collins packing.
McCain?
McCain?
Is Snowe still in there?
Thad Cochran is the third, IIRC.
Na, I think McPain is on the right side of this one(for once). I think he REALLY doesn’t like Hagal.
“Thad Cochran” o ok!
Let's hope so.
Sadly, it’s never a question of if the pubbies will cave....only when they will cave
That’s funny, didn’t notice that when I did the copy and paste!
Exactly.
I don't know who these Pubbies think they're fooling or impressing but it sure ain't me.
Why didn't they put up this much fight over something important, like I don't know, raising taxes recently (letting the Bush tax rates expire)?
Ultimately, and honestly, what does this particular fight mean, or what were they trying to accomplish? Make Repubs look even more obstructionist?
For every day since this has started I've remained unimpressed at this colossal waste of time. After all, since when, in recent history, has a presidential cabinet appointment been defeated in the Senate? And for what valid reason did it ever occur beyond mere political posturing?
This is just a perfect example of how ineffective and irrelevant all of Congress has become. They waste time on endless political posturing a and let projects and never get anything substantial done. At least nothing that actually HELPS the country.
Cochran, Collins voted yes...
Dem Murkowski voted Yes...missed Johanns but think No
Cloture vote fails, Hagel twisting slowly........Harry Reid extremely disappointed.
Pascagoula ship construction (of course) a “special deal....!”
