New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has fought against smoking, big sugary drinks and salty food during his tenure, is setting his sights on a new foe: Styrofoam.
Bloomberg plans to use part of his Thursday State of the City address to push for a ban on Styrofoam food packaging. He also will call for initiatives that would increase the number of parking spaces for electric cars and begin recycling more plastics and food waste
"One product that is virtually impossible to recycle and never bio-degrades is Styrofoam ... something that we know is environmentally destructive and that may be hazardous to our health, that is costing taxpayers money and that we can easily do without, and is something that should go the way of lead paint," Bloomberg will say, according to excerpts of the speech obtained by The Associated Press.
He said his administration would work with the City Council to ban Styrofoam food packaging from stores and restaurants.
"We can live without it," he said. "We may live longer without it. And the doggie bag will survive just fine."
Polystyrene foam, sometimes sold under the brand name Styrofoam, makes lightweight, heat-retaining containers, but environmentalists aren't fans because of how long it takes to break down in trash.
Some communities around the country have barred eateries from using to-go containers made of it. A proposal has stalled in the City Council in recent years.
Steve Russell, vice president of the American Chemistry Council, a trade group, said recycling polystyrene was something to look at instead of a ban.
"The technology exists to recycle polystyrene foam foodservice right now," he said, pointing to efforts in California.

What amazes me is how some people absolutely love having a Nanny at the helm, guiding their every step in life. Is Doomberg’s next step to ban private real estate and demand New Yorkers move into apartment dwellings?
Bloomberg, Emanuel, et al continually remind me why I despise big cities.
“Bloomberg also said that the city would install curbside electric vehicle chargers that would let drivers recharge in 30 minutes and that his administration would work with the City Council to change the city’s building code so that up to 20 percent of new public parking spaces are wired for electric cars, with the goal of creating 10,000 spaces for electric cars over the next seven years. “
Excellent. Spend more millions of dollars on something totally useless.
Styrofoam holds the heat. Once you buy your coffee at a bodega or sidewalk cart, you then have to schlep 2 or 3 blocks to your place of work, wait for crowded elevators, walk down a corridor before you get to your desk. Styrofoam helps.
Personally, I’d like to see the return of the iconic blue Greek coffee shop cup - a symbol of NYC.
Does anybody else have a problem with the new Metrocard? Mine is green and black. I thought the yellow and blue was fabulous!
Have you heard that there is rumbling among the upcoming candidates that they will get rid of the bike lanes? Not creepy Quinn, of course, but others.
Go, Bloomberg!
I encourage this petty tyrant to keep pushing and pushing.
I love it when fascists go hog-wild and let everyone see them with their pants down. It’s long past time that New Yorkers - the most segregated city in the United States - feel the pain of liberalism in its most “perfect” implementation.
I can’t wait to see what he bans next. I’m literally sitting on f%^&ing needles just waitin’ for it.
outside of the effete air of NYC and the Hamptons, Bloomberg could not exist.
We should just call him “Ozzymandius”. Look upon his ego and tremble.
Bloomberg IS the definition of mental illness.
The man doesn’t have the common sense God gave a goat.
By the way, expanded polystyrene foam was invented as a strategic material.
Next on the Bloomberg Petty Tyrant 2-Bit Ugandan Dictator Hit List:
1) Ban all forms of caffiene.
2) Ban wasteful toilet paper.
3) Ban metal.
4) Mandate a daily 10-minute worship of Bloomberg.
This guy is a complete a&&hole. When he dies, I will celebrate his death.
As long as they think Bloomberg is keeping down crime, New Yorkers will approve of his administration. He can go off on all the liberal tangents he likes, and it won’t matter to New Yorkers.
I’d refer da mayor to George Carlin’s Earth Day routine available on YouTube.
Oh God I hope so! Whoever promises that I will vote for them in two seconds. I know a lot of guys who are going through absolute hell because of those freakin’ things, trying to make deliveries and they have to haul over those stupid things not to mention it makes traffic a billion times worse because now they have to triple park, park almost in the middle of the street.
What happened is he put that absolute ditz Janette Sadik-Khan in charge of all that and the woman has absolutely no idea what the hell she is doing, and Mike Putzberg just will not fire her. She has a law degree and a degree in political science and rides a bike, she doesn’t even drive! But to Schmuckberg that is perfect qualifications to run transportation in the entire city. When Alan Dershowitz sister got killed riding a bike I thought that would be the end of it, he would sue the hell out the city, but nooo, it still goes on.
People in New York City do not drive cars in general.
I would wager there are more privately registered vehicles in Washoe County, in N Nevada than in all of NYC—NOT COUNTING CABS & LIMOS!!!! I am only comparing person cars!!!
The world will be a better place when this tyrant, POS Bloomberg is six feet under.
Next we have to get rid of that stupid, tourist pedestrian walkway in Times Square. It upsets traffic, destroys the ability to get a cab after a show and has become a dirty haven for goofy tourists and the naked cowboy. Yuck!
bloomberg may actually be the only american politician with an even bigger dictator-like mindset than obama, its every close, mind you, but I think bloomberg has the edge.
Sure but who wants to drink coffee that has styrofoam
disoslved in it? Or a Styrofoam derivitive
If it’s drunk fairly quickly, you get no taste of styrofoam. It’s none of Bloomberg’s business even if it causes instantaneous cancer.
Bloomberg wants to overtax the power grid in the names of cars that will stop working in a prolonged power outage. What an vile, statist moron he is.
As for the styrofoam, he can come down here to my town and have it after he pries it from my cold, dead hands.
Nanny State PING!
