About 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, a suspected armed robber entered Leddy's Candy Store at15928 Grand River and demanded cash from the 54-year-old owner, who is licensed to carry a concealed firearm.
He produced his weapon and fatally shot the intruder, who was about 40 years old, according to Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens.
Leddy's Candy Store sells retail and wholesale confections.
The owner of the store told Local 4 the business, which has operated since 1926, has been robbed several times in the past few months.
The shooter was taken into police custody for questioning. Stephens could not confirm if he had been released as of Tuesday evening.
Detroit police had recorded 32 homicides through Feb. 3 of this year, three fewer than by the same date in 2012.
This is the third justified shooting by a permitted concealed gun owner to gain publicity this month.

There were something like 5 in the same week that the basketball coach shot two.

In Michigan he would have an open and shut case if it wasn’t for that word “suspected”.

I wonder if there was a security camera in the store. That would help the owner establish his self-defense.

Yep, if he can prove that he was protecting his life and not his candy he wins.

Good. One less piece of trash.

He’ll win. Most Michigan courts are pretty good with these cases.

Doesn’t seem happy to me. For all we know the candy store owner is still “in custody.” As of Tuesday evening the police spokesman couldn’t say if the guy was still under arrest.
CC, help me out here: Is it typical for a CCW-authorized shooter to be taken into custody in the first place?

Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't.

I guess it depends on the place and time. Maybe standard procedure in Detroit, maybe not in Homer. Eh. I imagine the police kept the gun, I hope he has another.

If he’s charged he can use the Twinkie defense.

I’m guessing there’s a discretionary element here that we don’t see. I’ve seen these run the whole range depending on the prosecutor, responding officers etc.

Not anymore. No Twinkies. :^(
It’s been said the shelf-life of a Twinkie is 1,000 years, but it turns out they couldn’t survive 4 years of Obama.
