Wrestling should be removed from the 2020 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board recommended on Tuesday as it looks to revamp the Games sports programme.
Wrestling, contested in the first modern Olympics in 1896, will join a list of seven other candidate sports battling for one spot on the programme. It is very unlikely, however, that wrestling will get back in.
The IOC session in Buenos Aires in September will still need to ratify the decision.

Disgusted that one of the founding ancient sports from Ancient Greece is to be dumped.
The Olympic games have become unwatchable, thanks to corruption, as well as anabolic steroids. I won’t miss the Olympics. Probably the last time I took an interest in the games was probably about 2004.
I bet they kept badminton.
Yeah, anyone know what other sports are on the cut list? I’ve been hopeful that women’s softball will make it back in the games. However, it appears to me that the IOC’s main criteria for what sport should be cut is whether or not its dominated by te U.S. if yes, then it’s a candidate for the chopping block. And so it goes....
Indeed, this is a huge blow to all our upcoming wrestlers who set their eyes on the olympic gold. It seems they are setting their sights on sports that favour the chinese or other asians, anyone but the americans.
125 medals have been won by the US in this sport, Russia will be pissed too as will Turkey, Sweden and scandanavians.
So wrestling is being dropped for this lot.....
squash, roller sports - who both failed in their bids in 2009 - karate, wushu, which is very popular at the Asian Games, the nautical sport wakeboard and sport climbing.
Squash and karate are generally seen to be leading the race to win the sole spot for the 2020 Games which will be held in either Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul.
Guess whichever one the chinese want they will get.
The Olympics has become just another business to generate TV revenue, and to hammer political propaganda into the audience. I feel very sorry people who have grown up dreaming of competing and training to be there, but they are being utterly exploited for others to make huge dollars on a phony political stage.
Unreal. Wrestling was one of the ORIGINAL Olympic sports. That just disgusts me.
What are they replacing it with...flag turning? Honestly.
wow, my wrestling nephews will probably be bummed to hear this. I have no idea if they have any Olympic aspirations but jeez. How can you dump such a classical sport?
Is there some kind of law saying we HAVE to, for all eternity, hold the olympics every damn two years? It used to be four. It’s become an industry. What does Zeus have over us that we now just HAVE to have the olympics? Says who? I don’t give a rat’s as* about the stupid olympics. Enough already! Then again I’m one of those grumps who thinks birthdays should stop being celebrated after age 12 so...
They are still only held every four years each. They just staggered the Winter and summer games so that they don’t occur together in the same year. I actually kind of prefer it that way myself.
Synchronized swimming
figures. They barely televised coverage of the sport as it was. I know this will make you mad :(
We can only hope that the pillow fighting contest isn’t scotched.
“Guess whichever one the chinese want they will get.”
1. Drunken iPhone assembly
2. Knock-off smuggling.
3. Wu Wei synchronized crashing.
Wow, this sucks. I’m assuming this will apply to both modern wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. I’ve always found the latter to be one of the more exciting competitions in the games.
I wonder how much longer that skiing and shooting event will last.
One of the original things the ancients did. Wow! Maybe a Dancing With The Stars activity will be added?
They keep dancing(floor routines) but eliminate wrestling. Sheesh.
