The problem with President Obama’s ideology is there’s never an end to it. If you’re someone who believes government needs to act wherever there’s a need, then government will never stop expanding. However, government is inherently inefficient, and the larger the government, the more inefficient it becomes. So when the government acts, it creates further distortions which will require even more government to address. It becomes a never ending cycle of expansion until there’s no area left free.
So that’s the issue here. There’s ALWAYS a need somewhere, and there’s ALWAYS some sort of problem that needs to be addressed. No government is ever big enough for the likes of President Obama who probably sees the US Constitution as an annoying, archaic restriction on his ability to help people. He’s not alone. President Bush, for example, had his $30 billion AIDS program for Africa.
We should also be aware that government programs do help some people. There are millions of people right now who are on the upside of wealth redistribution programs. That includes seniors getting expensive medical care far in excess of anything they ever paid into Medicare, poor people on Medicaid, welfare moms, and even crony capitalists with lucrative government contracts. Have no doubt, some people are indeed benefitting from more government.
It’s not that conservatives don’t believe in helping people. We do. It’s how people are helped that matters. If people are better off because they’ve essentially robbed their neighbors, I don’t agree with it. If liberty is sacrificed so some people are protected from their own bad choices, then again, I don’t agree. In the end, the left will have sacrificed prosperity and liberty for nothing.
