TRENTON New Jersey Democrats will introduce legislation today meant to give convicted criminals a better shot at finding work.
The measure, known as ban the box, would require employers to consider the qualifications of job candidates before asking about criminal histories, state Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D-Union), a primary sponsor, said Wednesday night. Giving jobs to former convicts will reduce recidivism rates, he said.

Aren’t the boxes reserved for felonies? ..not all criminal history.
Because getting a “fair shot” at broom-pushing vs an illegal alien is going to keep a criminal off the streets.
the jokes just write themselves.
It depends on the job.
Better to let the employer know and decide for themselves. My paint crew at the factory were about 85% inmates out of a halfway house and they were awesome and made me proud to be their foreman.
Yes . . . and those convicted of fraud crimes should run for office and become politicians because I’m sure they’d be very good at the job.
Is this satire? < /sarcasm>
We wouldn’t want to discriminate, would we? Eventually the only way we’ll be allowed to differentiate people will be on the basis of evilness. By which I mean how conservative you are.
Democrats: Stop banning job Democrat candidates with criminal records
True enough. An unknown illegal can load luggage on an airliner but you never know when a guy busted for writing bad checks might snap and kill a few hundred Americans.
If anybody DOUBTED what kind of DAMN fools run this state, the comments from this leftist strumpet here should clear that up.
“Better to let the employer...decide for themselves”
Exactly. If they’re worth it, it would only punish businesses to “discriminate” against them. Plus, like immigrants and stupid kids they might work for less, for the thrifty minded.
Great idea! The congressman should try this out within his own staff - and require everyone he personally knows on pain of public humiliation - for a year.
Then report back and tell us the results...
“My paint crew at the factory were about 85% inmates out of a halfway house and they were awesome and made me proud to be their foreman.”
Back in the ‘70s when I ran large concrete crews in Alberta and B.C., I was surprised at the number of guys who would approach me privately after some months on this very demanding job to ask me if cared that they had been in prison for murder, robbery, assault and so on. These weren’t kids, but grown men - some were truly straightened out and among the top hands on the crew.
Certainly better than college boys.
Why? Democratic politicians looking for work?
This is not the business of government.
ANY employer should have full discretion as to whom they choose to hire or choose not to hire, period.
No, I don’t mean they should be free to hire illegal aliens. LOL
Having said all of that, I believe there are some felons that do deserve a second chance, but it depends of the individual, the job and their given crime propensity. In other words, some felons may be worth the risk, but only the risk that an employer has knowingly accepted.
Nice- as if job hunting isn’t competetive enough! Now, hard working, educated and clean living Americans have to compete with criminals for work?!!
