Wasn't there a mag 8 at 3.6 miles depth just the other day in the same general area?
Lots of shaking going on.

Go to the link and check out the time zone chart. This is the same quake that hit last night.

Site of the last of the big 1942 carrier battles between Japan and the USA.

OK, thought that one was originally determined to be at a depth of 3.6 miles according to what I read then, will have to check latest.
3.6 miles seemed a little shallow.

Looks like they had a mag 8 at 17.8 miles depth and a mag 7 at 5.5 miles depth.
Still a heck of a lot shaking.
Wonder if that mag 7 was an aftershock?

The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands was a Pyrrhic victory for the Japanese. While they succeeded in sinking the
Hornet and mauling the
Enterprise, they not only suffered damage to two carriers themselves, but they lost 99 aircraft and 148 invaluable airmen. Among the pilots lost were five group/squadron leaders and eighteen section/flight leaders.
The only battle where they lost more airmen was the Battle of the Philippine Sea, almost two years later, although they did suffer heavy losses at Coral Sea (90 airmen), Midway (110), and Eastern Solomons (61).

I’ve been watching this for the past 24 hours and that is one active spot right now. I think there was something like 9 or 10 quakes over 5.0 in one hour yesterday near Santa Cruz Island! INCREDIBLY active!!

Huge number of aftershocks in the 5-6 range. Can you imagine the devastation if this had hit the New Madrid Fault?
