The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands was a Pyrrhic victory for the Japanese. While they succeeded in sinking the Hornet and mauling the Enterprise, they not only suffered damage to two carriers themselves, but they lost 99 aircraft and 148 invaluable airmen. Among the pilots lost were five group/squadron leaders and eighteen section/flight leaders.

The only battle where they lost more airmen was the Battle of the Philippine Sea, almost two years later, although they did suffer heavy losses at Coral Sea (90 airmen), Midway (110), and Eastern Solomons (61).
