MIDLAND CITY, Ala. – The Alabama man who held a 5-year-old boy captive for nearly a week engaged in a firefight with SWAT agents storming his underground bunker before he was killed during the rescue operation, the FBI said Tuesday night. Also, bomb technicians scouring his rural property found two explosive devices, one in the bunker, one in a plastic pipe that negotiators used to communicate with the man.

Officers killed 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes Monday, said an official in Midland City, speaking on condition of anonymity. The bunker raid came six days after Dykes boarded a school bus, fatally shot the driver and abducted the boy, who by all accounts was unharmed.

Dispute with a neighbor. He had a court date on charges. A real whackadoodle from what I read.

PTSD is more of a mental/emotional condition. Back in the day it was called Shellshock. But those guys were a different breed back then. Fought battle after battle, no internet, no GoreTex, no smart bombs, nothing...and then a week after returning home, went back to work like nothing happened. Read “The Greatest Generation”
My grandmother's Step-brother on my Mom's side served in WW2. He came back and was never able to work. He'd walk the house at night. Scared my grandmother to death. Her Daddy just told her, "The war did that to him." I heard that he was on the beaches in Normandy. Watched his friends die around him. He never was right after that.

Some gave all.

We get plenty of detail from the MSM (even if most of it is BS) the one thing they never report is motive. What set this guy off?

How do they find out if the guy is dead? I'm glad he's dead, btw.

I have a gut feeling this guy was a “Falling Down” situation, it was prodded and pushed by every progressive agenda aimed at provoking him to erupt in anger and frustration.

There is too much darkness about this situation for me to see any light of truth, many FReepers have said we are to expect mini Waco situations soon, I think we just saw one.

This person does not deserve hate aimed at him just because of his actions, its better to aim our hate at the people and reasons that forced him to take his actions, because every single one of us if pushed hard enough could be backed into a corner and possibly forced to do the same, its an evil world out there right now with Obama in charge.

The man killed and is guilty but just exactly why did he? And I will not accept FBI troll comments anymore here at Fr, we know they live here gathering intel.

I think the guy had Mr Brown Syndrome. Mr Brown was an old guy that lived with his equally weird wife near me when I was a kid. He would call the cops on us kids all the time. The local police would have to respond, but they would just wave at us as they drove by. We would be playing smear the queer, kick the can, or just be riding our banana bikes in the doctor’s parking lot. It would happen at least once a week during the summer. He even pulled a gun on my older brother. We never told our dad because my dad would have killed him.
I suspect the bus stop was very near this guy’s property and the kids were littering or doing something to agitate this freaky guy. It may have been just loud talking while they waited for the bus. I bet the guy was up every morning listening to ‘those rotten kids’ imagining everything they did was to spite him.

I am thrilled that the little boy survived but why is there no talk of his father. Did he have one?

Good observation. What a nation we live in....

As far as I’m concerned PTSD comes from lack of training and lack of mental fortitude. Pysch tests need to be better or put ‘em through Ranger training and if they last more than two days they’re clear. LOL

Then you know very little of PTSD......

I play softball with a guy who is dealing with the effects of agent orange as well as "anger management issues" directly related to his diagnosis of PTSD. He is still receiving counseling thru the VA here in Detroit.

He had been shot twice during two tours in Vietnam as a marine, and participated in the battle for the Saigon embassy during the Tet Offensive in 1968. Here's what that was all about:

I’m probably the only person on the planet sad that he died.

No you're not, I'm saddened too. It's been reported that he was a Vietnam vet and if so, I suspect his anti-social behavior he exhibited towards his neighbors was a direct result of his service in-country........

May he rest in peace....

That wouldn't explain the well-trained, very tough guys I've served with who were diagnosed with PTSD. You really don't know who it's going to affect or how acutely.

PTSD is another way they will disarm America. A diagnoses of PTSD will be grounds for a weapons bar.

What better way to disarm all the combat vets.

I agree that’s likely where it’s headed. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t real and doesn’t effect people.

Too often on FR I see this kind of crap bandied about—”They’re just weak, tell ‘em to suck it up!” Yeah, great plan, tough guy.

However, I will say I’m very leery of people who are diagnosed with PTSD who didn’t see combat. I’m not a psychologist by any stretch, but it seems rather fishy.

I have a family member who went off the deep end. Never saw combat, was US Army. We don’t know what happened.

This is one of the worst posts I have seen on FR. Mini Waco? The guy killed a bus driver and kidnapped a 5 year old. Think about that. Not aim our hate on the person that committed murder and kidnapped a child? Are you serious? Blame the people that “caused” him to do this? Again, are you serious? I’m sick of these posts on here.

"Possession of an old M80, “quarter stick”, or shotgun bird bomb is now “possession of an explosive device” and “possession of a high explosive”."

Bird bombs? How the heck are we going to be able to break up noisome mass roosts of starlings or cattle egrets now?

Besides, I hear tell (from unnamed sources) that a single bird bomb over their heads is superior to a regular warning shot for putting trespassers on notice that they are in the wrong place...

Bird bombs -- a few grains of black powder in a cardboard case smaller in diameter than 12GA bore -- "high explosive"? YGBSM!!

A blackpowder bird bomb would (probably, IANAL) be OK. The ones I’m familiar with have flash powder, a case, and a fuse, and it’s the flash that makes them “high explosive devices”.

From ATF (note that “theatrical flash powder” is called HE)
...................
Binary Explosives

Binary explosives are pre-packaged products consisting of two separate components—usually an oxidizer like ammoni¬um nitrate and a fuel such as aluminum or another metal. These components typically are not listed separately on the List of Explosive Materials and do not meet the definition of “Explosives” in 27 CFR 555.11. Therefore, ATF does not regulate the sale and distribution of these component chemicals, even when sold together in binary “kits.” However, when the binary components are combined, the resulting mixture is an explosive material subject to the regulatory requirements found in 27 CFR, Part 555.
Storage

All explosive materials, including mixed binary explosives, must be stored in locked explosives storage magazines as prescribed in the regulations found in 27 CFR, Part 555, Subpart K—Storage, unless they are in the process of being used, manufactured, transported, or physically handled in the operating process.

High explosives – such as mixed theatrical flash powder–must be stored in Type 1 or Type 2 magazines, or in Type 3 magazines for temporary attended storage.
Low explosives must be stored in Type 1, Type 2, or Type 4 magazines, or in Type 3 magazines for temporary attended storage.

Explosive materials may not be left unattended in Type-3 magazines (day boxes) and must be removed to Type 1, 2 or 4 magazines for unattended storage. For indoor storage, explosives magazines are not permitted in any residence or dwelling, and no more than 50 pounds of explosive materials may be stored in any single building. Storage regulations do not apply to binary explosives until they are mixed.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing

Mixing binary components together consti¬tutes manufacturing explosives. Persons manufacturing explosives for their own personal, non-business use only (e.g., personal target practice) are not required to have a Federal explosives license or permit. However, individuals or companies must obtain a Federal explosives manufac¬turing license if they intend to engage in the business of manufacturing explosives for sale or distribution, or for their own business use. Such business uses include manufacturing for use in commercial blasting applications, removing obstacles such as trees or rocks during construction, theatrical special effects, and for demonstration or product testing purposes.

Therefore, licensed manufacturers and dealers of pre-mixed binary explosives kits, such as those used to make exploding targets, including those who combine the components to make videos or photos for use in marketing, or to test the product, are subject to Federal recordkeeping requirements and must maintain records of manufacture or acquisition, distribution, exportation, use, inventory and daily summaries of magazine transactions found in 27 CFR, Part 555, Subpart G—Records and Reports.

“However, I will say I’m very leery of people who are diagnosed with PTSD who didn’t see combat’

Would being in a home hit by a tornado and being hospitalized for months be traumatic enough?

There are many kinds of traumatic experiences, not all of them combat, though combat does have a pucker factor of 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Looks like ATF is making up crap as they go along (again) — creating new definitions. According to that definition, almost any common commercial firework (sold at stands on the side of the road here in Texas) is HE — and that is a bunch of bull...

I'm with you justice14. There are always "reasons" behind the actions of violent people, but we always have a choice in our behavior. Yes, we are all sinners, but this man was a dangerous murderer. He and he alone is to blame. He needed to die.
