Oh B.S.
Those that had one before 'the craze' did so because, like most rifles chambered in military calibers,
ammunition was easy to find & relatively cheap.
And most of the buyers were familiar with them from military service...

Remember, to the NY Times, “serious gun enthusiast” = Fudd with maybe three guns, all high dollar custom pieces.
