What I find hard to understand is why they seem to think that what they do in the bedroom is the be-all-and end-all of their identity.

It's the second law of homosexuality:
To the mentally healthy (heterosexual), sex is something you do.
To the mentally diseased ('homosexual'), sex is everything you are.
