Middlesex DA Leone weighing run for U.S. Senate

Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone tells the Herald he’s considering getting into the Democratic race for U.S. Senate, a move that could shock the party establishment and completely shake up the special election battle.

“I’m going to give it some thought,” Leone said in an interview, adding that he’s been besieged by calls from supporters urging him to get in the race — especially since former GOP Sen. Scott Brown announced yesterday he was not running.

The only two announced candidates are Democratic congressmen Stephen Lynch of South Boston and Edward Markey of Malden. Markey, who has the backing of the party establishment, just announced his campaign today.

“I think the dynamic changed when Scott got out,” Leone said. “I need to make a decision one way or another very soon.”

Leone announced less than a month ago that he would not run for re-election as district attorney in 2014 and said he would not be running for another elective office.

He told the Herald it’s still his “intention” to leave politics but he has gotten so many calls from supporters he is now thinking of running for Senate, adding that his supporters “made a good case for it.

One potential Republican candidate is taking himself out of the special U.S. Senate election, the Herald has learned.

Former GOP state Senate Majority Leader Richard Tisei, who narrowly lost a congressional race to U.S. Rep. John Tierney last November, confirmed he will not be running, and said he is focusing more on another run for Congress.

“I’m going to stick to what I wanted to do,” said Tisei, who also was the GOP lieutenant governor nominee in 2010. Tisei plans to send out a statement tomorrow telling Republicans of his decision.

Massachusetts Republicans are still scrambling to find a candidate in the June 25 special election after former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown announced he was taking a pass on another Senate campaign.
