The White House has released a picture purporting to show President Obama "skeet shooting" at Camp David. An activity he claims he does "all the time."

The White House also warns all you mischievous internet types to not mess around with the picture:

"This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House."

Yep, it looks as if they staged the photo recently. He's aiming awfully low and straight ahead for skeet.

Actually he is beyond super-expert, and is wowing the crowd by shooting the aerial skeets from more than two miles away. And hitting every single one, too. That's why he's aiming so low.

You're right about the AKC poppers - they are very smoky (and they dirty up your shotgun something fierce). Also very very loud.

I mostly run HRC and they use primer loads instead of poppers - quieter, less smoke too.

Wouldn't be surprised if this was a popper load. I just don't see a typical 12 or 20 ga. skeet load putting out that much smoke.

Not to mention that the right side of the compensator has a huge jet of smoke, while the left side has none at all. Very odd -- but perhaps the wad on the popper was transiting at the time?

It's a compensator, more specifically a "ported barrel".

There are small holes bored into the barrel near the muzzle, on both sides. The combustion gasses escape out these "ports" instead of all exiting via the muzzle. The ports are designed so that the gas escapes upwards, thus limiting muzzle climb.

It is very, very odd that the visible smoke is only coming from the right hand side of the compensator.

Also odd that there is only one choke installed (on the upper barrel).

Photoshop or not, this looks weird. Just the technical end, not his horrible stance and gun handling.

I heard later today that the photo was taken on his birthday which is first part of August. Splains the green trees and grass.

He’s standing straight and almost leaning back instead of leaning into it. He probably got coached but he definitely doesn’t look like he is comfortable holding/shooting a gun. The idolizers will think it’s proof that he actually shoots. Shooters know instinctively it proves he doesn’t.

Oh. I have shot skeet in years since it tends to dull rather than strengthen my ability to down dove and quail. I use a single barrel pump. Never saw a skeet choke before. Guess he only needed it on the top barrel to fire once for the photo op. Based on his aim the trap operator needs to dial in a little up elevation. Thanks for the info.

I haven’t seriously hunted since college, but in high school I was a pretty good dove hunter. I had a right-handed .410 that I shot left-handed. When dove came by, I could work the bolt the same way other guys used a pump. Could bag 2-3 dove at a time.

I never had a .410. My first shotgun was a 20 gauge pump I got when I was 10 yrs old. Gave it to my younger brother and got a 12 gauge pump when I was 14. I like a good pump shotgun and own 3 different 12 gauge shotguns.
