A Republican House freshman will be in the spotlight Friday at an NAACP press conference for an email he sent to the state organization, calling the group and its leader "racist" and "race-opportunists."
Rep. Michael Speciale, R-Craven, along with all other state lawmakers, received an emailed version of a statement last week by NAACP state president William Barber on proposed voter ID legislation.
In the statement, Barber calls voter ID initiatives "national propaganda efforts by the far-right to justify the obvious tactic to suppress the votes of minorities, youth, disabled and the elderly," and urges Republican legislative leaders to abandon their push for such a law in North Carolina.
WRAL News obtained the email below that Speciale sent in response:
From: Rep. Michael Speciale Date: Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 4:39 PM Subject: RE: NC NAACP Statement as Read at Morning News Conference on Voter Suppression To: "northcarolinanaacp@gmail.com"
Dr. Barber,
This is as insulting a diatribe as I have seen in years. The NAACP has a proud history of working on behalf of black Americans to address the problems of society directed at them. You tarnish that with your racist diatribes and your race-baiting attitude. The photo requirement to vote is to prove that one is who they say they are. Nowhere in anyones minds but yours and your fellow race-opportunists is race, ethnic background, or color of ones skin mentioned, insinuated or inferred regarding the proposed voter ID laws.

Where’s the beef?
Of course the NAACP is a racist organization. It’s entire reason for existence is racist.
How is this news?
I don’t know anything about this congressman, but he’s courageous for pointing this obvious fact out and putting it in writing. I only hope the GOP leadership doesn’t now decide he must be punished.
All you have to know is that the congressman is caucasian and he is criticizing an African American. Therefore guilty.
Well they are racist. It is reverse racism. The NAACP only cares to trash the Anglo-Saxon culture that founded this nation and implement socialism and play the race card.
That was an awesome letter. Well done, Congressman Michael Speciale. Now don’t back down!
He stated the obvious. The organization is by its very nature racial, and in its leftism it is racist.
Like a good member of the “Stupid Party” he will come out either this weekend or Monday and apologize.
Members of the Stupid Party always apologize for nothing...and the Dems know this.
When challenged about this congressman’s letter, just make sure the complainer has read the letter, and not the mischaracterizations of the letter.
Ask them which part of the letter they disagree with.
It’s news because the newly elected GOP official actually took on the NAACP instead of cowering when being called racist.
good for him, awsome letter
our wimpy political process could do with some balls such as demonstrated by Nigel Farage who doesn’t hesitate to call ‘em like he sees ‘em
I hope he sticks to his guns. He is 100% right.
1. The true or actual state of a matter.
2. Conformity with fact or reality.
3. A verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like.
Add this guy to Cruz and we have a start...
Has anyone noticed he represents Craven County?
Given the Rep’s stance, I’d say that’s a bit of a misnomer.
Looks like Kerry Bentivolio who took the McCotter seat in Michigan isn’t cowed by GOP leadership either. Freshmen usually spend the first two years under the thumb of the party bosses.
this is how you’ve got to do it....play the lefts game and fight fire with fire....
btw- i made the mistake of turning on the TV last night and the NAACP image awards were on....i doubled my mistake by watching jamie foxx speak after receiving an award...he said “black people are the most talented people in the world” and the crowd applauded...
imagine if rush limbaugh or some conservative actor said “white people are the most talented people in the world”...
hope they don’t get corrupted like all the rest incl Scott Brown and Paul Ryan
Encourage this gentleman, please.
