Actually nobody knows if he was competent enough to be an officer ~ that was the Nam, and as time has demonstrated, there were plenty of people who were assigned duties as officers and they’ve utterly failed ~ think of Calley, Powell, Carey ~ and that’s just for starts.

I served in US Army personnel administration during the Vietnam era, and know for a fact that many enlisteds scored high enough to be offered OCS, and declined because it meant a longer commitment.

I did precisely that.

Unless you have/know Hagel’s scores, you don’t know what you are talking about.

I can respect both men for their service, and not agree with their every political stance. I would not vote to confirm Hagel.

A novel thing; holding two ideas simultaneously in one’s own mind.
