Alabama has won the title of the most conservative state in the nation, followed closely by North Dakota, Wyoming, Mississippi, and Utah, a new Gallup poll reveals. Rounding out the Top 10 reddest of the red states are Oklahoma, Idaho, Louisiana, Nebraska, and Arkansas. Alabama took the crown after a majority of residents 50.6 percent of those polled told Gallup they identified their ideology as conservative. North Dakota and Wyoming tied for second place with 48.6 percent of residents in those states saying they are conservative. The Top 10 conservative states are all red states that vote reliably Republican in national elections, all located in the nation's Southern, Midwestern, and Mountain West regions, Gallups Frank Newport said. But perplexingly, three states considered the most Republican Kansas, Montana, and Alaska do not rank among the most conservative states, Gallup found. And while Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas rank in the Top 10 conservative states, they are not considered among the most Republican. As for most liberal, Washington, D.C. takes the crown, followed by Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont, Delaware, Connecticut, Washington, Hawaii, and New York. Some 40.8 percent of Washington, D.C. residents said they identified their ideology as liberal. The state with the most moderates is Alaska, followed by Rhode Island and Ohio. The distribution of ideology in 2012 generally reflects the familiar blue state, red state patterns that define the political geography of today's modern America, Gallup said.

While North Dakota is conservative - the elected Republicans are not.
I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee.
The fact that Alaska did not make it to the top 10 is no surprise to me. When I lived there I knew a lot of conservatives but the number of union thugs and libtard loonie tunes is staggering and the indian and eskimo populations could not exist without generous government “assistance”.
When my wife and I left, AK lost 2 solid conservatives and Idaho gained two.
And yet look at some of the senators, Congressmen and other elected officials in some of these states. They elect Manchin-like “conservative” Democrats who talk the talk to get elected and then vote for the Dem Party leadership in Washington. The “most conservative” states for me are the ones who have elected the most conservatives and have the smallest state governments. It isn’t based on whether people call themselves conservative. We learned a long time ago that people like to call themselves conservative and then vote themselves all kinds of government benefits.
Not certain what is meant by KS being conservative but not necessarily Republican, or is it Republican but not necessarily conservative?
This must surely have been counted before this past election or January 1, 2013. What ever, our governor, Sam Brownback and the people in Topeka are rolling back liberal/RINO projects and laws off the books, working for an income tax free state and lastly, working to have direct election of our judges, sweeping out all of the Planned Parenthood/George Tiller loving judges out of office!
Utah should be lower. They re-elected Snorin’ Orrin, and defeated Mia Love for Congress.
These should be the sites of the first ten Republican primary elections in every single election year. To hell will letting Dem states like Iowa and New Hampshire choose our candidates for us.
Roll Tide, y'all.
Congratulations.
I'm in Pennsylvania, we rank 30th.
I can take some small comfort in knowing Pennsylvania has been described as "Pittsburgh and Philadelphia with Alabama in between". :o)
Why should conservatives identify with the Republican party?
Interesting poll.
I remember the first TIMEI drove the Pennsylvania turnpike. I was amazed at the beauty of the countryside and how many country music radio stations there were.Made me miss Alabama ..
Yep, it’s still that way! :)
The oil industry is unionized on the slope, the oil wealth creates funding to provide a huge social support net, but it also allows Alaska not to have state sales, income, or in many places property taxes; double edged sword.
Been here 20 years and I see it becoming more conservative politically. The fact that conservatives here don't trust the Republicans either, doesn't make the state a liberal stronghold. Alaska has elected a couple third party Governors since statehood in late 50's.
Best idea of the decade. Git’r Done!
I’ve lived in Alaska and have noticed how the state is leaning towards the left. The native population is in perpetual victimization mode and the white libs are all to happy to keep them thinking that way.
‘And while Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas rank in the Top 10 conservative states, they are not considered among the most Republican.’
In other words it is a b.s. poll.
BTW you are absolutely right about North Dakota. Hoeven could just as well be a Democrat, and Heitkamp would be a Communist if she didn’t have to win any elections. Even the state legislators are squishy and tend toward Scandinavian communality.
Montana is a weird one too. Leftist transplants have taken over the larger cities (Billings excepted, but not by much) and now both senators and the governor are lefties.
But the Montana statehouse still has lots of good conservatives...the kind who were movement conservatives before it was a movement. Knock wood.
Well at least Louisiana makes it into a good top ten list for a change.
THis poll is pretty wrong. Shows Maryland with a 5.2% conservative advantage. Let’s see, the General Assembly has been under rat control since the Reconstruction with 12 out of 75 Senators being Republicans. A similar disparity on the house. In Washington, there is exactly one Republican representing Maryland in the Legislative Branch.
Uh huh.
I’ve only lived here three years and it seems anywhere outside of three counties is strongly conservative but our voice is mute.
You gotta good point there.
