New court paperwork reveals that prosecutors have unlocked a great deal more information from Trayvon Martin's cellphone, including satellite-tracking information that shows where it was in the days leading up to his shooting.
But if it also lays out the teenager's movements Feb. 26 — the day Trayvon was shot and killed by George Zimmerman — prosecutors have not released that to defense attorneys.
Defense attorney Mark O'Mara disclosed that information Wednesday in a new court filing, one asking for more time to prepare for trial.

Information from Trayvon's phone is one example. The Android-powered smartphone was found near his body, its battery dead, the night of the shooting. It's a key piece of evidence because a young Miami woman says she was on the phone with him moments before the shooting and overheard the conversation between Trayvon and Zimmerman.
Sanford police and Florida Department of Law Enforcement employees had limited success finding out what was on the phone because they were "locked out," the consequence of someone trying repeatedly without the proper password or PIN to gain access to its data.
The state then shipped the phone to a law-enforcement agency in California for more analysis, O'Mara wrote in his new motion, then sent it to a New Jersey company, which successfully unlocked the data in its flash memory, including GPS information that showed its changing locations.
What it found has not been made public.
"It shows you within 10 feet where the phone is," O'Mara told the Orlando Sentinel.
De la Rionda provided those new findings to defense attorneys Jan. 18, O'Mara wrote, but with a gaping hole.

Having worked within the law enforcement relations department at a major cell phone provider. I’m not buying this. They can triangulate in real time. They can figure out which cell towers you are/were pinging by looking at data records. This is not GPS, however.
Towers and phones track a LOT of data, but your precise location was not ever included in any of our subpoenas. The closest we could get was identifying towers that the phone was closest to.
Now, in REAL time they can just use tower triangulation (or gps) to tell where a phone is, and pretty accurately. I’ve seen it done with triangulation alone. Amazingly accurate.
So, anytime your cell phone is on, you are being tracked.
I was actually involved in designing the reports we gave law enforcement in response to subpoenas. There were a LOT of data points, but this kind of accuracy was not one of them. If we had been trayvon’s provider, we could tell law enforcement that he was in the apartment complex at that time even if he was not making a call. The reason? His phone’s pings to the tower would tell us which tower he was near.
That’s about it. If they can track more than that in some way I was never made aware of, it wasn’t in any of the reports we generated in response to subpoenas. They were usually used to show that a person was NEAR a particular place at a particular time based on what tower he was pinging. And that data is stored for at least seven years.
If you are up to nefarious stuff, do what drug dealers do - use a prepaid phone and throw it away when you’re done with it.

Doesn’t take much “banging” on the password to lock the phone up. 3 wrong passwords in a row, repeated 2-3 times with a few minutes delay, will lock mine up until I plug it I to a host computer. Any idiot will be tempted to try.
Hell, all they needed to do was: 1. Charge the damn battery. 2.Call the provider with the 15 digit IMEI, and ask for the frigging PUK code. Not that tough.
That would be extremely convenient timing, but it’s possible he talked it to death. But then the GPS records would exist for the day in question (up to the time the battery died) that the prosecution is stonewalling. Another possibility this brings to mind is the gal pal could be lying from start to finish when she claims to have had a conversation with St. Skittles.
I don’t think the battery was dead all day. He wouldn’t have been carrying it if it was. I think the dead battery is a ruse the prosecution is using to justify not giving up the legally requested GPS records for the day of the event. His traced path must be pretty damning for them to do this, unless they are simply stalling to run Zimmerman out of money and has to go with an incompetent Public Defender.
I know basically nothing about cellphones but I do know that mine is capable,through google,of tracking my location.One must check several approval boxes to set it up but it works surprisingly well.
It does work, but it drains the carp out of the battery. Which may explain a lot here.
Wow, this is so obviously a railroad job, it’s disgusting. How can the day of the crime GPS data be missing...it’s more likely been hidden.
The battery was dead on the phone when police took possession of it? How did he chat with DiDi on a dead phone?
The woman who made this report was a professional journalist. She should be on TV.
Your phone always know exactly where you are, or turn by turn navigation would not be possible.
The question is whether the phone records the exact data. It does for a fact record data points that are used for the phone to locate cell towers. I once had a utility to download that file and impose the points onto a map. They all promised to quit doing that but I doubt they did.
They for sure can know any phone calls he made and any txt messages that were sent.
