Bipartisan Plan Faces Resistance in G.O.P.

MICHAEL D. SHEAR January 28, 2013

GREENVILLE, S.C. — At Tommy’s Country Ham House, a popular spot downtown for politics and comfort food, not much has changed since 2007, the last time conservatives here made it crystal clear to politicians how they felt about what they see as amnesty for people who entered the country illegally.

“What we need to do is put them on a bus,” said Ken Sowell, 63, a lawyer from Greenville, as he ate lunch recently at the diner. “We need to enforce the border. If they want to apply legally more power to them. I don’t think just because a bunch of people violate the law, we ought to change the law for them.”

Six years ago, the intensity of that kind of sentiment was enough to scuttle immigration overhaul efforts led by President George W. Bush and a bipartisan group of lawmakers, including Senators John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, both Republicans.

Now, as a new bipartisan group of eight senators, including Mr. Graham and Mr. McCain, try again — (snip) — members of Congress will have to overcome deep-seated resistance like that expressed in the restaurant if they are to push legislation forward.

Republicans are betting that opposition from Tea Party activists and the party’s most conservative supporters will have less impact because of the dire electoral consequences of continuing to take a hard line regarding immigrants.

(snip) There is some evidence that the politics of immigration may be changing. Sean Hannity, the conservative host at Fox News, said days after the 2012 presidential election that he has “evolved” on immigration and now supports a comprehensive approach that could “get rid of” the issue for Republicans.

It just warms my heart how generous the NYT is with their advice to Republicans.

To summarize that advice - “Roll over. Play dead. Good boy.”

Actually they never seem to get the Good Boy.

Well, if it is simply a case of taking issues off the table, why not just give the Democrats everything they want? Oh, wait, the GOP already is.

Time for a new party...

Democrats react to GOP idea that passing amnesty will help them win elections

Part of the Kabuki theater, folks.

Don’t be fooled.

This deal was already signed. The rest is entertainment.

If it’s a “bipartisan” plan, then where’s this resistance coming from?

Agree but Tea Partiers screwed up in AZ and got McCain re-elected. With 71% Hispanics voting for the Rats, this number will only increase in future elections. And Rubio is the new golden boy in FL. And don’t forget the new generation of Bushes.

hehe

Texans and Floridians will be all hat and no cattle. Amnesty will mean Texas and Florida go the way of California, and the dream of any conservative ever winning the presidency will end there, as defeated as the Texas and Florida of the Confederacy.

I recall Mel Martinez was the golden one too of the GOP too .

Rubio is a con artist .
Amnesty push will kill his chances along that K st stooge Ryan .

Watch Rand Paul actions since he has been very clever lately .

The more Senators and Rep get targeted the better .
Grahamnasty is a K St bagman.

It doesn’t really matter what people think; congress and the president will do whatever the h*ll they feel like doing, anyway.

The days are gone when congress was the people’s house and responded to the will of the people.

American has an Imperial Government, now, and they mostly do whatever King Hussein wants them to do.

The last time this nightmare was pushed at us, the NATION rejected it by a wide margin. It isn’t just conservatives or the GOP. For example, I’m sure the blacks getting ethnically cleansed from parts of California are just thrilled about this.

“But in many Congressional districts around the country, the prospect of intense opposition carries with it the threat of a primary challenger if Republican lawmakers stray too far from hawkish orthodoxy on the issue.”

Yep, EXACTLY!!!

They WILL find themselves in a VERY COSTLY Primary contest if they vote against their constituents on this issue. EXACTLY the same for the gun grab. The Tea Party, and others, WILL hold these people accountable. The days of voting one way and campaigning the OPPOSITE way are over...and they know it!!!

GOP - read my lips, no amnesty in any way shape or form, ever. The moment you let several tens of millions of criminals become citizens two things are going to happen.

One, several tens of millions more will flood across the border and complete the destruction of the United States.

Two, while this is happening, no GOP candidate will ever be elected again. You will have thoroughly alienated your base, and the 'rats will have several tens of millions more voters who they will easily convince they are solely responsible for giving to them citizenship, free healthcare, etc.

You hear me GOP? Amnesty is suicide.
