The .46 Caliber Semi-Automatic Rifle That Changed the World

Behold the Girandoni air rifle, a 20 round high capacity tubular magazine and air reservoir which fired at roughly the same velocity as a modern .45 ACP. It can punch straight through a 2x4 at 100 yards.

Invented by Tyrollean Bartholomaus Girandoni around 1779, this revolutionary rifle is four feet long and weighs a manly 10 pounds. It's semi-automatic rate of fire and, for the period, its immense firepower reserve made it a fearsome thing to contemplate in battle. No appreciable bang, no smoke and at least 20 rounds before its punch began to diminish.

Ever seen a .338 Lapua Magnum? Guy had one at the range today. The rifle looked like a .50cal, which aren’t allowed at our county range. The cartridge is huge.

It was said Napoleon issued orders to execute anyone captured with an air gun.

“A longer barrel in a pneumatic gun increases velocity (to a point), and higher air pressure also increases velocity (to a point). As those points are approached, the gains from longer barrels and higher pressures have diminishing returns, so designers must balance that against making a gun too long or using pressures too high for safe and convenient operation.”

I think the company is Evanix. I know they make .177 selectable semi-full automatic. Somewhere I have the catalogue. There is another manufacturer that makes the 9’s and 45’s. Check out Evanix.com.

45 joules energy with .177. Pretty spiffy.

I don’t care what it costs, I WANT one of these! 1.25” steel balls with the same muzzle energy as a 30-06! Full auto and Johnny Fed don’t have to know squat about it. This is wicked.

A very good video except near the end when the speaker says that Lewis and Clark went all the way to the headwaters of the Potomac in the Cascades.

I’ve just got 2 new .223 AR-15s, and I enjoyed taking them out to the range last weekend. However, because I have only 5 acres and I live in an outer ring suburb, local ordinance prohibits target shooting on my property with a firearm.
Would anyone have a recommendation for an air-gun that might give me a similar feel to my ARs? That way, I could get some practice between range outings.
