Schieffer: GOP should focus on women, minorities, not "old white guys"

(CBS News) Republican Party leaders are searching for the way forward in the wake of an election they believed should have gone their way.

Bob Schieffer, chief Washington correspondent and host of "Face the Nation," said on "CBS This Morning" that Republicans are still reeling from the defeat. He explained, "You started out with very high unemployment, you had an economy that was not in great shape. You had all of those signs, polls showing most people thought the country was headed in the wrong direction, and yet the Republicans lost, and I think they're just trying to figure out now how they can broaden their appeal, and that is the problem.

"They're talking a lot about what they can do about the logistics and the tactics and all of that," he said. "But what they have to do is find some way to appeal to young women, to Asians, to Hispanics, to African-Americans, and to people who, you know, are not kind of the folks that sit around the men's grill at the country club, a bunch of old white guys. They're doing pretty well with some of them, but they've just got to find a way to get beyond that, and I think that's what they're doing right now. Bobby Jindal (said) in a speech he made last night and he said we've got to stop saying stupid things and that's just kind of basic. You know, parties have a way ... of coming back. And what they'll be able to do, we'll see. But at least they recognize they've got a problem."

But it's not just the Republicans that are facing an uphill fight these days. Democrats are realizing they may have a problem when it comes to the gun control debate, as Democratic Majority Leader, Sen. Harry Reid, of Nevada, himself may become a roadblock to new legislation.

Schieffer remarked, "Harry Reid is up for reelection in 2014. He comes from a western state where this is a very, very serious issue to a lot of people out in that part of the world. People who live out in remote areas. You know, they feel like they need to have a gun. So this is going to be tough.

"I don't know if this assault weapons ban is going to pass or not. What I do know is I think the atmosphere around here is changed. I think before this session of Congress is passed, there will be something done, whether it's background checks, something else to strengthen these gun laws. It's just, Newtown changed things around here. I really think it was going to be a tipping point. I think what the administration is trying to do is build support out in the country, so that Washington will take notice. But this is going to be a tough one."

There’s nothing wrong with the Republican party. Obama won a second term because his terrible policies — ObamaCare, higher taxes on business owners, etc. — had not yet gone into effect by Election Day, so people haven’t been suffering from them.

Joseph Stalin was very popular when his first five-year agricultural plan was still on the drawing board; but when it went into effect and millions were dying of starvation, Uncle Joe wasn’t sending tingles up his followers legs anymore. And so it will be with Obama.

Patience.

I can still remember Walter Cronkite commenting after Reagan won New Hampshire. He said HW Bush could easily defeat Carter, but not Reagan—according to the polls. Oh well, he said, the Republicans never listen to us. They would rather lose with Reagan than win with Bush. They are headed for another Goldwater disaster. Cronkite was a very good friend of Jimmah’s!

I was driving my elderly mom to the drugstore, today. We ALWAYS talk politics and current events. She was VERY involved in politics when I was young. I grew up on many a politicians knee and went to many rallies. Our state was a Democrat stronghold for many years until Ike. She campaigned for him and worked the polls for many years for the Republicans. She has many hand-signed thank-you letters dotted along a wall in her house that have been signed be previous Republican presidents (my favorite being Reagan).

She said she got a call, today, from the RNC wanting money. Before they could finish, she lit into them about Boehner, and the rest of the RINOS.....and that she was switching to ‘Independent’ because the GOP/RNC/RINOS are complicit in what Obama is doing to our country and Constitution.....and have done NOTHING to fight him and stand for NOTHING.

I burst into tears because I know of all the work she put in throughout the years.....only to be let down.

Not only upset for her....but for my kids and long for them the country I once grew up in....and had faith in.

I can understand her feelings, I have those same feelings myself, I just don’t know where to go.

We need a third party, I suppose we could call it a third party, although the two we have now have melded into one.

Your mother is correct Republicans are complicit, and getting more so every day.

If anyone knows something about “old white men” it is Schieffer. He must have gotten his first job in journalism writing press releases for Moses.

I once sat next to him at the Pentagon’s Five O’Clock Follies press briefings, about 1972. He was a pompous ass then, and this is, only an older and bigger ass.

For your Vietnam war buffs, here’s my war story from the bowels of the Pentagon (I was in Nam in 1970 as a journalist).

We got daily newspaper clips from around the country, called “Current News” (edited by my old friend Ben Ziskin). One item concerned a N. Vietnam MIG 21 attack on a B-52 “cell” ( i.e. three aircraft).

The MIG went right thru the cell during its attack. I asked Jerry Freidheim the Pentagon’s chief spokesman at the follies, whether our B52 gunners shot back (Some older B-52’s were unarmed. Newer ones got some twin 50’s or so.

Jerry replied that he couldn’t tell us because it was classified. Oh boy, BS.

I was talking the Gen. Chappie James (also a DOD information officer) about this and I said to him (he of about 6’4” or more, over 250 pounds, and wearing lots of brass) - The No. Vietnamese know if we fired on them, our bomber crews knew if we fired on them, only the American people don’t know if we allowed our gunners to have guns and shoot back”.

Chappie gave me a great big grin and a wink (saying, I know what you mean. It’s all BS).

That was my only 5 O’Clock Folly at the Pentagon and none in Nam. I got my information on the ground.

I’m rather amazed at many of my friends and relatives. Usually it’s “me” who is the perpetually downbeat one, as I indeed follow politics and cultural trends much more closely, and really gauge the decay. It is “they” who have been the more optimistic ones, always supporting GOP candidates and jumping on the rah-rah bandwagon during election time. Just like clockwork.

However, I bring up politics with them now, and they just want to change the subject immediately, invariably muttering some kind of “America is gone” or “The country is dead” before trying to switch topics. This hasn’t happened before with these folks. They’ve never been like this. It’s a little jarring, coming from them... as opposed to my own similar negativity. The 2012 election really left an impact.

Bob Schieffer, faithfully fulfilling the CBSNews requirement that the the flagship news figure of the the Tiffany Network must publicly establish that he’s raving mad and or senile before being allowed to retire.

An old broken down Commie in love with a Kenyan Muslim who is sending the nation that made him wealthier, more famous and more influential (unfortunately) down the tubes, and all he can do is lament why the GOP is not pandering to illegal Mexicans with 4 kids, 3 pit bulls and 4 fake ID’s.

The Republican Party has major problems, listening to bullsh*t advice from old White washed up talking heads and trying to stab Conservatives in the back, while pushing Liberal Candidates that can’t knock off a big government Marxists.

If Romney would have just 2 percent of the white vote he would have won. He lost because millions of white voters stayed home. Yet Romney could have galvanized the white vote by just running nation wide political adds exposing Eric Holders public statements that White American are not protected by Federal Hate Crime Laws against racist violence, combined with crime reports of rampant racist violence against whites.

He could have also gotten a lot more Hispanic votes by pointing out Holders history of ignoring black on Hispanic violent hate crimes while he tries to railroad the Hispanic shooter of Trayvon Martin for murder when the overwhelming evidence shows that Zimmerman shot in self defense.

But Romney, the Republicans, and most conservatives, are cowards on this glaring racial double standard. They grovel before the race card in national politics no matter what they might say privately.

+1

When Barrack was elected I immediately went and bought a bunch of guns. Prior to that day, I hadn’t considered needing more than what I had.

Sadly, I lost them in a swell which washed all my guns overboard. All was not lost, as I was able to secure the beer on board our nearly swamped boat...
