Candy, soda, tobacco, and bottles of water and sports drinks are all in Gov. Deval Patrick's crosshairs as he announced another $2 billion tax wish list in his $34.8 billion proposed fiscal 2014 budget at the State House this afternoon.
Among the tax highlights:
The cigarette excise tax would be hiked by $1 to $3.51 per pack. Taxes on cigars and smokeless tobacco would also increase. The state would essentially expand the bottle bill to include water bottles and sports drinks on deposits. Candy and soda would no longer be exempt from the state sales tax.
Patrick last week proposed increasing the income tax tying the gas tax to inflation and hiking RMV fees, tolls and MBTA fares as part of a proposed $2 billion in transportation improvements and additional education spending.
Patrick last week unveiled an education plan that he said would cost an additional $550 million in the 2014 fiscal year to pay for universal access to early education from birth through age 5, fully fund K-12 education and allow for extended school days in high-need schools.

Tax the productive to pay the teachers’ unions.
What I wonder is why is Deval proposing this now? He’s been in office for a while.
I wonder if he’s trying to be in the Obama-groove. Maybe he figures Obama’s election makes it time—or maybe it’s the other way around—Obama wants a Massachusetts “success” to point to for some of his future country-wide initiatives.
This creep almost sounds as bad as Mikey Bloom-Turd (FOODNAZI-NY).
Perhaps a positive impact of these taxes is they might reduce illicit drugs as organized crime may find if far more profitable bootlegging commodities like cigarettes, cigars, incandescent light bulbs and high flow toilets that the government nanny state says we shouldn’t have.
I’m all for an excise tax on butts.
Between Moochelle and Hillary we’d halve the deficit right there.
Taxing BUTTS! That’s RACIST!............................
David Garofalo and “Mr.”Jonathan Barbeau are laughing their asses off.
Deval Patrick is the anti Sir Mix a Lot.
hopefully the surrounding states will wise up and lower prices on all these items....starve the big fat ugly beast..
Raise the tax on smokes $10.00 a pack. I haven’t bought smokes in Mass for 3 years. Hello New Hampshire!
Are the liberal massholes so stupid that they can’t see that this turd is a slimy fascist?
You conservatives stuck behind enemy lines in MA need to get your families out now. If you need recommendations on where to settle in a patriot blue state like South Carolina, drop me an FR email. We are hiring.
