Mickelson expects to make 'drastic' changes
LA QUINTA San Diego professional golfer Phil Mickelson said after the final round of the PGA Tours Humana Challenge on Sunday that he will have to make drastic changes in his life because of the federal and state taxes he is paying, and he confirmed that his decision to not buy an interest in the Padres was directly related to his financial situation.
"I'll probably talk more in depth next week (at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines). I'm not going to jump the gun, Mickelson said. There are going to be some drastic changes. I happen to be in the (tax) zone that is targeted both federally and by the state, and it doesnt work for me right now.
Mickelson, 42, was responding to a question about why, in a conference call last Monday, he referred to whats gone on the last couple of months, politically, when talking about the semi-retirement of fellow tour pro Steve Stricker.
I think were all going to have to find things that work for us, Mickelson said on the call. "I think we're all going to have our own kind of way of handling things, handling time in our career, handling what's gone on the last couple of months politically. I think we're all going to have to find things that work for us."
Asked if there was a correlation between his views and his withdrawal from interest in the Padres, Mickelson said, Yeah, absolutely.
Mickelson made it known on Dec. 18 that he told the Padres he wouldnt be part of the ownership group after expressing enthusiasm throughout the summer for his possible inclusion.

How’s his wife doing? I know she needs intensive medical care.
Further along in the article ...
“If you add up all of the federal and you look at disibility and unemployment and the social security and the state, my tax rate is 62, 63 percent, Mickelson said Sunday. So I’ve got to make some decisions about what I’m going to do.”

That sound you hear is the sound of tents being folded. Mickelson is not the only one. He saw what happened in November (In CA it was even more devastating that getting socked in the gut with more Obama), and calmly made the decision not to take any more risk at this time. A lot of people are doing that.
I love this guy...
not because of any of this, but because he is the pitchman for enbrel..
this drug is a damn miracle, my pa is soooo much better..
He’s welcome to come here to Texas.
He should leave CA now before they put up a wall to keep the taxpayers from leaving.
The libs will come out full force against him...”anti obama; anti sharing; anti american (as Obamiacs see it); anti poor; anti social justice; anti anteing up to help his fellow man.” The blood suckers will complain because the blood bank is closed at the Mickelson house.
I envy guys like Mickenson in one way though, he can do it, he can close up shop and say FU. I cannot so in the end, the middle class will get socked for all the tics.
Welcome to the gulag, Comrade.
Over the course of 2013, I suspect that dozens of sports figures who reside in California will find reasons to relocate to Vegas or Arizona. For people with small business operations....it wouldn’t surprise me if they decided to keep the business there, but move their house just over to Vegas and camp out two or three days a week in California while staying most at the Vegas house.
When I saw this story, I rewrote it in my mind.
“Private citizen decides to move to another state, nation shocked. Citizen blames high taxes for the move.”
The rest of that tour (and the other tours) all seem to live in Jupiter anyway. In that profession, it’s hard to find a better place.
Honestly it's not that simple as the State of California believes in the 5 days he is there at the tournament the endorsement money should also be taxed at 5/365 for the money earned in California.
It insidious.
Alaska at 6.4% of income
Nevada at 6.6% of income
Wyoming at 7% of income
Florida at 7.4% of income
New Hampshire at 7.6% of income
That’s called “F*ck you Money”. It means I can say what i really believe cause it won’t hurt me financially.
BTW Phil Don’t forget the IRS crawling up your putter as a result of this honest proclamation.
By drastic, I wonder if Phil is just talking about a move to Fl? Maybe Russia, Ala depardueax?
State taxes is a huge untold part of the story about why athletes move. Think Jeremy Lin, Miami Heat, ect.
He’s still a golfer and he has little kids. None of the states you listed are better than TX for his situation. He doesn’t have to live in a $5 million house in TX to have a very nice castle.
Any news on the impending doom of Obamacare? I’m anxious to see you proven correct.
A 62% tax rate is unconscionable. We’re supporting an entire deadbeat class - both the welfare recipients and the bureaucrats that encourage it.
Can you imagine the US growth rate if these people were simply cut loose and had to perform and produce? They’d revolt against all the job-destroying licensing and regulation.
“The libs will come out full force against him...anti obama; anti sharing; anti american (as Obamiacs see it); anti poor; anti social justice; anti anteing up to help his fellow man.

Don’t forget “racist”. That ALWAYS comes out.
