'Taxation Without Representation' plates on Obama motorcade
The Hill ^ | 1/19/13 | Kevin Bogardus

President Obama’s motorcade sported “Taxation Without Representation” license plates for the first time on Saturday.

As part of the National Day of Service kicking of a weekend of inaugural events, the president has traveled to the Burrville Elementary School in Northeast Washington to participate in a City Year service project. Three vans in Obama’s motorcade were outfitted with the unique D.C. license plates as the president traveled to the school, according to a White House pool reporter.

The reporter said other vehicles in the motorcade had Maryland, Virginia or U.S. government plates.

The White House decision earlier this week to use the license plates was considered a victory for D.C. statehood advocates. Obama had avoided using the plates during his first term as president.

“President Obama has lived in the District now for four years, and has seen first-hand how patently unfair it is for working families in D.C. to work hard, raise children and pay taxes, without having a vote in Congress,” the White House said in a statement earlier this week.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) is the District’s sole representative on Capitol Hill. Norton is a “non-voting” member who can only vote on legislation during committee hearings.

Pathetic, childish and silly.

Feel free to amend The Constitution and The Residence Act.

Correct, except for gross receipts, excise, real estate, traffic tickets, parking tickets, etc.

Thinking that one can tax onesself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle

They could always move.

Besides, I’m sure around 50% of D.C. residents have no idea of what this is even about.

TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION???

As things stand now and for all intents and purposes ALL Americans that are supposedly represented by the House of Representatives are being taxed without representation.

As long as the Senate continues to hold the appropriations budgeting process hostage and President Obama continues to spend under continuing resolutions based upon a long ago passed bloated Democrat budget with automatic increases built into it MY REPRESENTATION on fiscal matters and my IDEAS are not being heard or given action.

The results of the 2010 elections have been effectively set aside by the leftist ruling class UNTIL a budget is passed and my Representatives participate in the process of passing it!

All Republicans need to be screaming this message for all to hear -loud and clear. No Debt Limit Increase UNTIL REPRESENTATION is returned to the People as per the Constitution.

Would making DC a “state” for the purposes of Senate and House representation require a Constitutional Amendment?

Would making DC a “state” for the purposes of Senate and House representation require a Constitutional Amendment?

Why, yes, it most assuredly would. As provided by Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 of the United States Constitution:

"To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings...

I do not believe there to be any doubt whatsoever that the "District" that will "...become the Seat of the Government of the United States..." can only refer to the District of Columbia. It is further very clear from this constitutional provision that The Framers did not intend the contemplated federal district to be a state, but intended for it to be a separate federal district administered by Congress.
