From http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/01/california-man-pays-off-13000-property-tax-bill-in-coins-dollar-bills/:

A California man who failed to pay his property taxes for over five years has finally come up with the money ...

Not feeling sorry for a guy who didn't pay property tax for five years. $3000 per year isn't too bad of property tax depending on how big the house is.

Really, what you mean is that $3,000 a year is not bad for leasing your property.
No, sorry in California when most of the money goes to unions it is to much, even if the guy were late.
As long as you are forced to pay property tax, the property is NOT yours.

Wow, he made some bank tellers carry loads of change. What a great man...

I hate property tax but think this guy is an idiot if he intended to make a statement. It doesnt say for certain in the article.

In any case, he got some media attention.

Unfortunately many government offices have a “no change” policy for payments. The best you'll do is some old singles. Even then, you're only messing with the tellers.

Unfortunately many government offices have a “no change” policy for payments.

How do they get away with not accepting legal tender (coin of the realm if you prefer) for a public debt?

That is what it says on the federal reserve notes isn’t it; “this note is legal tender for all debts public and private.”

I don’t care if it is inconvenient for the poor little bureaucrats? They are legally bound to accept legal currency for a legal debt!

That sounds like something one of my elderly uncles could do and did; to pay a government with coins. They tried to bill him for back property taxes that he already had paid. They kept bugging him over and over with phone calls, sending demanding letters and to home visits (trying to scare him they would take his home). One visit, he told the collector not to come back. He showed them receipts that the tax was paid. One day, he had enough. He took a bucket of loose change to pay some dumb fee they said he had to pay anyway even once they admitted he had a zero balance. Of course, he was not very polite. I recall he said something about sunshine. :) The man at the tax bureau was constantly harassing our uncle. He told us not to go down or say anything. He would take care of it. Though, they did bother him for so long. Glad this man in the story paid his bill.

Wow... what a nice little socialist you are... only $3000 in shake down fees to keep what is yours. How kind.

I am paying property taxes on my parents home in Virginia-3 acres of land/3 bedroom home and storage building -it’s 288.88 annually.

“Don't like it? Take it to the supreme court or President Obama. Next!”

-Response I received to your question after trying to pay in coins from a giant Jabba-the-Hut-esque clerk who was on her 7th donut out of a dozen after a little more than an hour into the work day. She was so fat that she'd roll around the office on some poor little lowest-bidder chair that only supported one third of her bottom.

I have to wonder, if he hadn’t paid for five years, how was it he still even owned the property?

In South Africa, small change is considered legal tender only up to certain limits. If you have more than those limits, you need to change it at a bank for which you will pay a charge. Saves having to wait in supermarket queues behind those who have obviously just emptied their piggy banks!

Sure it’s legal tender but it’s still stupid. So he’s unhappy paying the bill. Why does he put it on the employees? He’s an ass.

I bet he didn’t go around trying to stuff dollars bills into coin slots (when such things existed) and then complain that the machine wouldn’t take his legal tender.

He would not be happy if he bought something at a store and they gave him his $19.37 in legal tender pennies. He’d probably run to the media and complain.

And he’d love it if he had gotten a tax refund from the feds in pennies.

He could have used the time be wasted pulling this childish prank to do something useful.

What does he get for $250 a month?
