NOUAKCHOTT — Thirty-four hostages and 15 of their al-Qaida-linked kidnappers were killed Thursday in an air strike by the Algerian armed forces, Mauritania's ANI news agency reported, citing one of the kidnappers holding captives at a desert gas field.

It was not immediately possible to independently verify the information from the agency, which has close contact with the group that has claimed responsibility for the mass kidnapping, reportedly in retaliation for France's military intervention in neighboring Mali.

ANI reported that the spokesman for the kidnappers said they would kill the rest of their captives if the army approached.

A local resident said there were many bodies at the site.He did not give firm numbers of the dead or say whether they were kidnappers, hostages or both.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera television carried a similar report. Those details could not be immediately confirmed.

Guess it wasn’t what we refer to as a surgical strike.

An airstrike sends a message; kidnappers die, whatever the cost.

That's the only message that will prevent future kidnappings.

Uh oh.

Did someone make a call to say "make this go away" ASAP? Did Algeria just act in this large and messy of a fashion unilaterally?

Moral of the story: If you want to make a lot of money in the oil field business, go to North Dakota. It’s a lot colder there, but your odds of survival are greater. (Barry is not likely to bomb you, either.)

The U.S. used to have a strict policy against negotiating with kidnappers because it was believed that doing so would encourage kidnappings. We used to be right.

I am hoping to hear from Netanayu in Israel demanding why such disproportionate force was used against the poor Jihadists. He should asked for the Algerian president and the French one to be dragged to the tribunal in the Hague for war crimes.
Amazing when france kill jihadists 6000 km away from their bordres the woorld applaud, when Israel hurt a plaestinian 1 km away from their borders the world goes wild with rage.
Lets hope president Holland of France finds himself on his one and that it becomes a long battle.

I think the policy changed when we discovered that the kidnappers didn't want money etc. and didn't mind dieing with the kidnapped. Muslim’s have changed the equation.

If this had happened during Bush's presidency, the left wing blogosphere would have laid all dead Americans at his feet merely because of the presence of a petrochemical plant and America's greedy unquenchable thirst for foreign oil: "How many gallons of American blood does it take to fill up the tanks of the SUVs at your Texas ranch, Mister Bush?!"

Obama is President? Not a word. In fact, the entire left wing is crossing it's finger just hoping this goes away quickly and quietly so as not to damage Obama.

May encourage future hostages to fight to the death, seeing as they have nothing to lose.

The policy changed when we found out that countries with whom we wish to curry favor harbor uncivilized savages.
