ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law on Tuesday a sweeping package of gun control measures, significantly expanding a ban on assault weapons and making New York the first state to change its laws in response to the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Mr. Cuomo signed the bill less than an hour after the State Assembly approved the legislation on a 104-to-43 vote. The State Senate approved the measure, 43 to 18, on Monday night.

The expanded ban on assault weapons broadens the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns can keep them but will be required to register them with the state.

Guess there will be a lot of “boating” accidents

They've got that one covered:

"S 400.10 Report of theft or loss of a firearm, rifle or shotgun.
1. (a) Any owner or other person lawfully in possession of:
(I) a firearm, rifle or, shotgun who suffers the loss or theft of said weapon;
(II) AMMUNITION AS WELL AS A FIREARM, RIFLE OR SHOTGUN WHO SUFFERS THE LOSS OR THEFT OF SUCH AMMUNITION AS WELL AS A FIREARM, RIFLE OR SHOTGUN; OR
(III) AMMUNITION AND IS A DEALER IN FIREARMS OR SELLER OF AMMUNITION WHO SUFFERS THE LOSS OR THEFT OF SUCH AMMUNITION shall within twenty four hours of the discovery of the loss or theft report the facts and circumstances of the loss or theft to a police department or sheriff's office."

Even drowning in the boating accident won't help, estates must inventory all firearms and report the inventory to the state.

“I don’t know what a “Fudd” is, but I’ll take a stab at it:”

We call them “golfers with guns”.

The useless gun owners who look down on the rest of us and are content to let us fight their battles for them. They typically believe in feeding other gun owners to the wolves hoping they get eaten last.

What do law enforcement people in New York think about enforcing unconstitutional laws?

Well Marty Golden, a retired police officer and now a Republican State Senator voted for the bill - and he was endorsed by conservatives and one of the NY gun lobbying groups.

“Can anyone confirm a rumor on the Internet and on YouTube that Bank of America is not allowing any of its customers (bank or credit) to purchase firearms or ammo?”

I don’t know about that, but Bank of America has interfered with 2 gun Co.’s so far due to their political stance on firearms, American Spirit Arms, and also McMillan Group International. If you support the 2nd you should deny Bank of America your business.

Are the NRA & other gun lobby groups filing lawsuits?

Was wondering the same thing. Where are the NRA/NY hunter's, etc on this?

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

Sure sounds like they are being infringed to me. NY has become a NAZI STATE! Hale Hitler and all of that.

A note of encouragement because I need it too. Been thinking about the long gun registration in Canada. It was a colossal failure in the end I think for two reasons.

21 Civil disobedience. We need to know study and understand this more. It wasn't in the media but I would assume that people did everything possible to muck of the system. An organized effort to not register needs to be acted on.

2) Liberal incompetence. The legislation was badly written and badly managed. The good news is will there be funds to implement all this?

Ha! Not bad for a *civilian servant*. Good grief. No wonder they'll never vote term limits for themselves. Why give up such a cushy lifetime career?

The law is wholly Unconstitutional. It violates DC v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago, AND US v. Miller.

This is going to blow up in NY’s face hard. Plus, given that they passed this at all, my company is finished with the state of New York. We are putting them on our permanent black list.

The people of New York need to revolt. That’s all there is to it.

Peter, I know an awful lot of gun owners, even down here on Long Island, and I’ll tell you...I don’t foresee a lot of them rushing out to register their guns.

I think the NY legislature is going to be very surprised at how few actually comply with this nonsense.

Regards froma potential new felon,
