sanctimony and petty personal self righteous insistence

People with those traits, in my mind, are not REAL conservatives. Do conservatives tend to be principled? Yes, but they act for the best interest of the nation. Liberals may claim they are acting in the best interest of the nation and hide behind it, but I have never seen one that had anything but self-interest at heart. Our problem is that we have way too many Republicans who are only masquerading as Conservatives. It is almost as if they exist as a double agent to do the bidding of the Democrats when the chips are down. Many Republicans do not really believe in conservatism, so they cannot articulate it in a way that allows them to emerge as a leader.

For several years, the Republican Party has intentionlly undercut conservatism. An articulate, attractive conservative candidate in the Republican Party will never emerge as a leader until the Party stops undermining them. Instead we get the likes of H.W. Bush, Dole, W. Bush, McCain and Romney. What a disgusting, uninspiring list!

That begs the question, what is a real conservative? When is a conservative not a real conservative?

Are there tests where a paper strip is wet by saliva or other bodily fluid where if it turns pink (red) one is a conservative and if it turns blue liberal?
