WASHINGTON (AP) The powerful gun lobby is gauging enough support in Congress to block a law that would ban assault weapons, despite promises from the White House and senior lawmakers to make such a measure a reality.
Senators plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of ammunition magazines, like the one used in the December shooting massacre that killed 27 people, most of them children, in Newtown, Conn. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has promised to push for a renewal of expired legislation.
-snip-
You dont want to bet your house on the outcome. But I would say that the likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this Congress, NRA president David Keene told CNNs State of the Union.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., responded with a flat out no when asked on CBS Face the Nation whether Congress would pass a ban on assault weapons.
Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a lifelong member of the NRA has said everything should be on the table to prevent another tragedy like Newtown. But he assured gun owners he would fight for gun rights at the same time. I would tell all of my friends in NRA, I will work extremely hard and I will guarantee you there will not be an encroachment on your Second Amendment rights, Manchin said on ABCs This Week.

Block hell.
They need to stop playing defense and push for greater freedom.
Congress is a DEAD END for the gun-grabbers. They simply don’t have nearly the Dem numbers that they had in 1994, and at least of the Dems are right now quivering in their boots, fearing to even have to vote on it.
The surest evidence of that was the Executive Order garbage coming out of Biden last week. That convinced me that their hopes in Congress had died.
But ALWAYS stay vigilant!!! You never know for sure while the issue is still be discussed.
I hope this is correct, but I wouldn’t put much faith in either McLame or Manchin.
Don’t take anything for granted, KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!
Could be, but you never know with these spineless RINO’s. Bonehead will probably get on all 4’s just to appease his new master, Odumbo.
The ONLY reason that the Dems (including Obama) have achieved as much power as they have is because they, intentionally, conceded the gun issue (without saying so, of course). They know they will GET CLOBBERED (figure of speech) if they have to follow Obama and Biden on this.
It was obvious that this was the strategy when, during 2009/2010, when they owned everything, they punted on gun control. In fact, the only significant gun legislation from them, back then, was the National Parks bill, which was an excellent piece of legislation.
There are likely 10,000,000 (at least) Democrat voters today that will jump to the Republican side if they see their gun rights going away - the Dems know this, and will NEVER support gun control in Congress. They can get away with big words, but once they get into the registration (or defacto registration), of confiscation, they will no longer be a major political party.
And Romney had the election in the bag after Benghazi. Keep up the pressure or the GOP will cave.
Ever notice how the NRA is always referred to as a “powerful lobby” by the left? Why do they never refer to the teachers’ unions or the trial lawyers’ lobbies as being powerful?
“Could be, but you never know with these spineless RINOs. Bonehead will probably get on all 4s just to appease his new master, Odumbo.”
I certainly wouldn’t put it past Bonehead - but there are boatloads of Dems that also have to be won over. And only a handful of RINOs can get away with supporting gun control, and not have a serious Primary challenge.
This is probably why they are now talking about immigration. They’ll probably try to sneak something through as a rider.
They have been, especially in state legislatures.
But methinks Newtown is a setback for national reciprocity for years.
None of my weapons would be used for assault, but might need to be used against a foe with good equipment. I prefer that I still, and forevermore, be allowed to match any opponent as I define it, not as the left defines it. I call it a "balanced approach", and "pro choice" as to the methods needed to defend myself.
Seems to me Mr 0bama has spent a lot of political capital on this cause, already.
The Dems have lost the entire ex ‘solid south’ that they used to have due to their love of gun control and ridiculous environmental pressure from the people who have never set a foot off concrete in their life. The gun-grabbing may sell well in NYC, Chicago, and Boston, but elsewhere, it is death to reelection.
The Republicans will hold strong. What I fear is Obama’s issue of an Executive Order.
It’s a setback for The 2nd Amendment, and everything associated with it, for the next 8-10 yrs.
Maybe they do but what about registration.
Executive Order needs to be re-examined because of the abuses by 0.
If an assault weapon ban is passed this year a firearm ban will be passed within the next 5 years, probably sooner
