Hoekstra: Obama’s Afghan Drawdown Opens Door to Taliban, Al-Qaida

President Barack Obama’s decision on Friday to speed up the drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan “reopens the possibility of the Taliban to emerge as a major player,” former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra tells Newsmax.

“It is a signal to the Afghan people—he signaled to the Taliban, and he signaled to the American people—that the U.S. role, the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, is done,” Hoekstra, the former GOP chairman of the powerful House Intelligence Committee, tells Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview.

“It may not be completed, but it is finished. The US will no longer be there primarily to defeat the Taliban and to maintain security in Afghanistan,” he added. “In the long run, what this does is really creates a significant uncertainty in Afghanistan—in terms of the Afghan government being able to maintain security in Afghanistan, and it reopens the possibility of the Taliban to emerge as a major player in Afghanistan, and perhaps for a resurgent al-Qaida to move out of Pakistan and again occupy both sides of the border. It’s troubling.” …

The Law of Effect shows us that we will receive more of the bad behavior that we refuse to punish. Since we did not fight to win in Afghanistan, we did not adequately punish them. This means that we can logically expect more bad behavior towards the US from this part of the world. When additional terrorist attacks occur, we can logically put the blame on Obama for failing to win this war.

I don’t believe we’ve fought to win since WWII.

It was brutal but done was done.

We should have left that hell hole the minute Bin Laden assumed room temp. Afghanistan will never be able to stand on it’s own. Too many ethnic groups that hate each other, to much corruption, and that mess called Islam have doomed it to internal fighting for eternity. No more American blood should be sacrificed there.

Elections have consequences. The people voted for immediate benefits, not long term survival. It appears they will experience the consequences. Unfortunately those who preferred another path will also endure the consequences. Representative government does not mean good government.

Amen. Mission accomplished. Let's have a tax to pay for it and a draft to supply the soldiers for continuous ME mission creep and we'll see just how much support there is for continuing.

My prediction.Karzi will leave for Britian or Saudi Arabia and live happily ever after on his Swiss bank account. The Afghan people that helped us in any way will be murdered by the Taliban and Afghanistan will plunge right back to what it was.

The Afghanistan war was lost the December 2001 day OBL crossed into Pakistan.

The subsequent waste has been staggering.

Karzai is a Pashtun which is the population from which the Taliban draw their support. He will reach an accommodation with them and step down, letting the extremists resume their rule. Or they may kill him. Who knows.

Either way, they will return to what they were before we set foot there. Net effect of our ten years' effort there will be essentially zero.

It’s against the law to aide and abet terrorists. But that is this administration’s policy.
