After repeatedly flying surveillance aircraft into disputed airspace with Japan, and Tokyo scrambling F-15s in response, China's now sending fighters of its own on "routine flights" into the East China Sea.
China Daily:
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday that Chinese military planes were on"routine flights" in relevant airspace over the East China Sea. Spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a press briefing in response to media reports that Japan sent fighter jets to head off a number of Chinese military planes spotted in Japan's "air defense identification zone" over the East China Sea on Thursday.
"China firmly opposes Japan's moves to gratuitously escalate the situation and create tensions," Hong said.
The area north of the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands, known as the Diaoyus in China, is reportedly home to billions in oil and gas deposits claimed both by Japan and China.

China is flexing its muscles do to the perception of US weakness under Obama, claiming territory from Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, etc. Obama's foreign policy will lead to a new world order. And we will be at the bottom.
We need to go in there with a stealth bomber and just blow those islet away, then they can argue with each other over some open water.
“We need to go in there with a stealth bomber and just blow those islet away, then they can argue with each other over some open water.”
Bad idea.
There is no guarantee that those bombers are mission capable. And even if they were, it’s not wise to anger the country that makes the stuff your military needs.
The new reality is America is weak, and getting weaker by the day.
America is not weak, just our current leaders...couple administrations from now, and we’ll be back on top.
Oh for heaven sakes.. who are they trying to BS? Everyone knows that Bush is the only one starting wars over oil. Give me a break. Golly.
We will defend communism wherever it rears its ugly head.
And 51% of the population agree.
The enemy is in the White House.
China realizes it US Debt notes are worthless as the US contemplates another increase in its debt ceiling. Thus, China takes revenge on Japan.
Huh? Why get involved at all? Just let the Japanese and China sort each other out; not to mention we would have committed an act of war against one or both of them by running a bombing mission.
the islets are not mere sand bars
the bases of the islets would remain, below the waterline, after any bombardment, and as such they would continue to be claimed as someone’s, may someone’s territory
as most of the disputed islands in the ocean waters around Asia are claimed by more than one modern nation
the article only concerns one such dispute and only one of the disputes in which China is using bullying and trying to use bullying and one-on-one negotiations, instead of southeast Asian multinational agreements, to get settlements in these disputes more favorable to it
unless the U.S. very, very strongly steps up it’s favor of the all southeast Asian multinational approach, China WILL try to bully its way, one by one, and there is no way of knowing if it will exceed everyone’s patience or pull itself back from causing actual military hostilities
“America is not weak, just our current leaders...couple administrations from now, and well be back on top.”
You mean Hillary Clinton and Corey Booker are going to be good presidents?
I guess the statement that we have treaty obligations, but no one expects us to go to war to defend Japan, is just like we have borders, citizenship, etc but no one expects us to do a damn thing about illegal citizens of other countries walking in here.
Or we have a Constitution but not when it gets in teh way of Obamacare or gun confiscation, or religious freedom.
In other words, nothing means a damn thing to the leftists who are attempting to subvert the entire world order.
The left will get many millions of us killed. We just had an election in which no one gave a damn about anything but Benghazi, Israel and Afghanistan - meanwhile we are being disarmed and China is preparing for the big one.
Probably the best thing Japan could do is give the Chinese a significant distraction away from the area. The nature of this distraction would almost have to be the loss of a significant, tangible asset for China.
And quite certainly, this distraction would have to have plausible deniability for the Japanese. Something under the heading of “bad luck” for the Chinese. Very bad luck.
That is exactly what is going on. Historically these islands have never been claimed or even contested by China before now. There has been no dispute until oil was discovered in the seabottom.
This is naked aggression by China and they are counting on Obama to do nothing. They are making a sound judgment about that, even though it is in the service of the usual Chinese criminality.
Darn.. poor Senator Feinstein. She's busy enough taking the little people's guns. Now she will have to apologize "on behalf of the American people" for every plane the Chi-Coms lose in any dispute with us -- if it happens.
Remember back in 2001?
Chinese pilot Wang Wei twice "buzzed" the U.S. EP-3 Aries II plane over international waters, flying directly for the EP-3 Aries II, the F-8 hit the propeller of the U.S. plane's No. 1 engine causing the crash of the Chinese F-8.
Best if the Americans apologise now - soon the Chinese could rule the US (2001)
"Dianne Feinstein, the senior senator from California, was unusual in rushing to apologise for the EP-3 incident."
BTW the Chi-Coms demand that American citizens be disarmed.. and who is the first to spring into action?
It's no secret that Feinstein and her financier husband Richard Blum have close ties to Red China. Some of their vast wealth comes from Red China.
“America is not weak, just our current leaders...couple administrations from now, and well be back on top.”
Well said! We can nuke anyone on the face of the earth but currently, we a have a pus&y leader.
Not only that, but this thing could escalate to the point where China and Japan (our two biggest foreign bond buyers) no longer have any money to lend us because they have other priorities. If they fail to show up for the next T-Bill auction, the only tool left in ObaMao’s arsenal is hyperinflation.
I wonder what the delivery time for guns and ammo is over there!?
